FROM THE YLEN COMMITTEE

We can't believe we’re back here writing another monthly recap for you!
This month we saw the Mate to Manager program kick-off with 14 participants catching up with Jill Rigney for 1 hour a week. The Mate to Manager program is designed so that participants can develop key communication and leadership skills so to be able to take their careers to the next step.

YLEN member, Sean Torta, head stockman at Delamere Station NT, had this to say: “I found [the Mate to Manager program] very informative and really enticed me to do some self-reflection about my strategies as a leader to be honest. I’m going to take a lot away from these next sessions!" YLEN is expected to hold another Mate to Manager program around July so be sure to keep your eyes peeled for when applications open.

Earlier this year, YLEN sponsored the NTCA Future Leaders program. The program is run by the NT Cattlemen’s Association and was established to help build leadership capacity of the next generation of leaders in the NT cattle industry.
In addition to this, the program allows for participants to gain insight into the broader agricultural industry in the NT and so some of the YLEN committee & members were fortunate to present to the group to further explain the live export supply chain. The group were even fortunate enough to watch cattle being loaded onto a live export vessel bound for Indonesia.

Following on from a great first webinar of 2022, the Onboard Short-Haul Management with Tim O'Donnell & Andrew Martin, we have scheduled another webinar for Tuesday 21 June 2022 and we think you’ll want to save the date for this one!

How many times have you been caught needing to update or provide your resume for a job or application? YLEN will be catching up with Mick Fry from Rimfire Resources, one of Australia’s largest recruiting agencies. Mick will be taking us through the essentials for writing your CV & what added extras you need to score the job of your dreams! You can register for the webinar here:

Also on the horizon; YLEN is extremely proud to be hosting the FIRST-EVER Darwin-based Onboard Stockperson's Course. This is one of the most significant opportunities YLEN have been able to offer to members and we are grateful to the FRRR Grant for making what has been a dream, a now tangible reality. If you think this is something you would be interested in, keep your eyes on the website for more details, applications for this will be open soon!

Until next month, we love seeing YLEN members out and about in the supply chain. Don't forget to tag us on Instagram using the #YLENatWork hashtag!

MEMBERS OUT & ABOUT
Foot & Mouth detected in Indonesia
Australian biosecurity officials are on high alert after reports of more than 1,000 cases of foot-and-mouth disease in Indonesia, with fears that a large multi-state outbreak here could cost the industry billions of dollars.

Anyone keeping or working with cattle, sheep, goats or pigs should be aware of the signs of FMD:

  • blisters on the mouth
  • drooling
  • limping animals.

If livestock exhibit any unusual signs, people are urged to call their veterinarian or Australia’s Emergency Animal Disease Watch Hotline on 1800 675 888.

You can read more about this here.
#YLEN member Sam Allen caught up with TLC to tell his story, have you had a listen?

Lumpy Skin Disease

Photo Credit: Department of Agriculture, Water and Environment
It is still a current threat to the Australian border - we must all be vigilant.
Australia has strict rules for the import of animal products to try to prevent the introduction of exotic diseases. However, lumpy skin disease could enter Australia through the illegal import of cattle products. It could also enter with an insect from a country that has the disease. Insects from other countries can travel to Australia by wind, or in a plane or boat.

HUMANS OF AGRICULTURE

A community that's passionate about the power of storytelling.
“So, my mum's parents came out from Malta, and my Grandpa, he just always loved beef cattle. His love came from growing up in Malta where he had a few small numbers of cattle.

When he came to Australia, he turned up with absolutely nothing in his pockets and just worked super hard.

He worked on the wharves and later retired while he was still quite young. It gave him the chance to then build our family farm near Inverleigh in Victoria, where he established Maverick Simmentals which then later led to setting up our stud Mavstar Simmentals.

My Grandpa would sell the cattle throughout southern Australia and overseas to China for breeding purposes and their stud attributes."

I was very young at this stage, but I remember we quite often would have our show team in the sheds, and different delegates would come in with their translator and just walk through and assess the cattle.

That's where my interest started with export, I was just so intrigued, like we had people from China and Mongolia coming to our farm to look at our cattle with us and it was eye-opening, even being that young.
I was like, ‘wow, this is really cool’. I started to get an appreciation that you needed the whole supply chain involved in export, and that it was never a two-sided sort of thing.

So I think from the perspective of [career] development it was always a very intriguing industry, there was always endless opportunity.
Today my mum, dad, brother, and I are running Mavstar Simmentals.
I’ve also been able to focus more on my rural photography business, it’s shown me a whole different side that I’d never really thought of when I was young as well.

I recently had the chance to head up to the Northern Territory, obviously I have seen the industry down south here in the export yards, and I’ve been a producer my whole life but up there it just seemed like there were so many different variables up there.

It’s a different world up there, the admiration I have for the cattle, they’re beautiful creatures, they have such a presence and they’re such an important part of our supply chain feeding people around the world.” - Ruby
Live Export Price Indicator or better know as LEPI, was developed to provide an indicator based on feeder male cattle exported to Indonesia via Darwin Port. The Indicator is looking at the previous 2 week history.
