eBULLETIN June 2022

PLAYS FOR THE YOUNG COMPETITION - NOW OPEN
MEET OUR NEW PASIFIKA TRAINEE SCRIPT ADVISOR

FROM THE DIRECTOR

Kia ora <<First Name>>

This month, longstanding staff member Stuart Hoar is leaving Playmarket. He has been on staff for twelve years – he left for a little while around 2017 and then came back but we’ll ignore that – a massive run, and we will miss him terribly. Stuart has been a major force in our relationship with clients and supplying feedback on what must be thousands of scripts. All the best Stuart for the next phase of your life.

We welcome Allison Horsley who worked for us a little while around 2017 and now returns (there’s a cycle emerging here). We’re thrilled Allison will be back on staff as Script Advisor to join Jason Te Kare. She was a highly-regarded script advisor during her time here, and since then has continued to forge strong ties throughout the country for her trustworthy advice to playwrights. Allison will work from her home in Dunedin, thus increasing our presence in Te Waipounamu. Currently four Playmarket board members are based in Nelson, Christchurch and Dunedin. Jason is currently working from his temporary home in Riyadh but will return next year to be based in Auckland.

The other big news is the announcement below of the shortlist and winner of Playwrights b4 25. Congratulations to all of these playwrights. These plays deserve to be seen on our stages and we look forward to seeing them develop.

Also announced below is the recipient of the Creative New Zealand Playmarket Pasifika Trainee Script Advisor residency. Congratulations Sarai. We look forward to working with you. We’re thrilled to partner with Auckland Theatre Company on this programme.

Our Te Hono programme, where a playwright and a script advisor are paired to work on a new script, is underway with 20 participant pairings. Applications were way above the number we can accommodate. These pairs will be working together intermittently over the next three months.

A number of publications are in progress right now – the Playmarket Annual is soon to go to print and the next in our guideline series and the volume of two verbatim plays are in preparation. The Annual will be in your mailboxes in July. The other two will be out in October and November respectively.

The next competition deadline is Plays for the Young which closes on 1 August.

Kia haumaru te noho.
