The Dirt: Resilience in Western Ranching

What does resilience mean to western ranchers? This Story Map shares the work of an interdisciplinary group, including University of Arizona researchers, who are studying resilience from the viewpoint of ranchers and land managers across the American West. Their goal is to share information from the perspective of ranchers to increase awareness of rangeland management and to encourage more discussions about change and adaptive actions.
Changing demographics in the rural West, increasing demands on public lands, climate change, invasive species, and a complex global food system are a few challenges livestock producers now face. The U.S. Department of Agriculture funded the work to better understand how rangelands and ranching are changing, and what other changes can be expected in the future.
UArizona's Christina Greene, Daniel Ferguson, Michael Crimmins, and Mitchel McClaran participated, along with researchers from the University of Colorado, the University of California, Utah State University, the USDA Agricultural Research Service, and Northern Plains and Southwest Climate Hubs.

Did you know...?
This edition of The Dirt is my (Peyton Smith, AIRES Communications Student Assistant) last edition after more than two years of weekly newsletters! I will be graduating this week with a major in Environmental Studies and minors in Hydrology and Spanish as well as various campus involvements in programs like Liverman Scholars, The Bio/Diversity Project, and UAZ Divest. It's been my pleasure to be a member of the AIRES team, and now I'm moving on to Denver to work with Resource Central and conserve water throughout Colorado!
