Promoting BRICS economic integration via Central Bank Digital Currencies
Luca Belli (CyberBRICS Director) participated in the Conference “Promoting #BRICS economic integration via Central Bank Digital Currencies”. The event was organized by the National Institute for the Humanities and Social Sciences of South Africa, the South African BRICS Think Tank (SABTT), Nelson Mandela University and the International Business School of Zhejiang University. The Conference aimed to analyze the development of digital currencies in the #BRICS countries, highlighting issues related to interoperability and international exchange, as well as the infrastructural arrangements that the Central Banks of these countries must make to implement these new technologies.

CyberBRICS director participates in public hearing on artificial intelligence
Luca Belli (CyberBRICS Director), Ivar Hartmann (CyberBRICS Associated Scholar) and a team of researchers were invited to participate in the public hearings of the Commission of Jurists of the Federal Senate responsible for supporting the elaboration of a substitute on Artificial Intelligence. Luca Belli presented the Chinese approach to AI, based on the CyberBRICS comparative research on Personal Data Regulations across BRICS Countries. UN Event On Bridging Digital Divides
On Thursday, 17 March, Luca Belli (CyberBRICS Director) participated as a speaker at the Side-Event of the UN’s 49th Session of the Human Rights Council – “Eliminate the Global Digital Divide and Safeguarding Human Rights”. Belli approached the development of community networks as alternative Internet access models and highlighted their important role in bridging the digital divides among the connected and the unconnected. He also emphasized the fundamental role community networks play in ensuring what he defines as “network self-determination”, that is, “the right to freely associate to define, in a democratic fashion, the design, development and management of network infrastructure as a common good, in order to freely seek, impart and receive information and innovation”.

Brazilian National Data Protection Authority (ANPD) seeks experts to regulate the role of data protection officer
The Brazilian National Data Protection Authority has opened a call for contributions, through technical meetings restricted to guests, to discuss the role and attributions of the data protection officer. The Authority’s intention is that external experts can contribute to the process of regulating the role of the DPO, under the terms of the General Personal Data Protection Law (LGPD). It is worth remembering that the Ministry of Labor has recognized the profession of DPO.

Popular e-commerce platform Shopee shuts operations in India
Singapore’s giant Sea announced its plan to shut down Shopee, its e-commerce platform, in India. Shopee entered the Indian market last year and gained wide popularity very quickly due to the wide range of budget offerings. The Shopee website and app are no longer available for download on the Google Play Store and the Apple App Store. Shopee said that it is shutting business in the South Asian market due to “global market uncertainties”.

Ramaphosa puts “Internet censorship law” into operation
The Film and Publications Amendment Act of South Africa, known as the "Internet Censorship Law" entered into force. The Act prohibits propaganda for war, incitement of imminent violence, advocacy of hatred and child sexual abuse material.

Major phone and SIM-card change planned for South Africa
The Independent Communications Authority of South Africa (Icasa) has proposed tying the biometric data of South Africans to their SIM cards in a move to clamp down on fraudulent activity.
The proposals are included alongside other draft regulations which were published for public comment by the regulator on Wednesday (23 March). The regulations define biometric data as the “measurement and statistical analysis of people’s unique physical and behavioural characteristics”.

South Africans to receive 50GBs of free data, according to the Government
According to the National Infrastructure Plan 2050, published by South Africa’s Minister of Public Works and Infrastructure, Patricia De Lille on Friday, every South African household will receive 50GB of data by the 2025/6 financial year.
The document says that the government aims to provide high-speed, affordable, and accessible broadband to underserved and low-income areas.
