Clover Lane Rezoning

75 people attended the first public meeting about the Clover Lane Rezoning, which was held on April 28. There will be another public meeting on Monday, May 9 at 6pm at Mordecai Historic Park Visitor Center. On Tuesday, attorney Toby Coleman will be speaking at the May 10 MCAC online meeting. We hope you'll join us to learn more about this proposed project.

The property is located on Wake Forest Road and is currently zoned Residential-10 and is in the Mordecai Conservation Overlay 2 NCOD. It is proposed to be rezoned to Residential Mixed Use with a maximum height of 5 stories, RX-5.

If you'd like to fill out a survey to give feedback on community concerns, click here.

We've also started a discussion channel about this on the MCAC Slack leadership group. The MCAC will work with the developers and help facilitate community conversations about this possible rezoning.

Scrap Metal Recycling a success!

Look at all this metal that we’re keeping out of the landfill! Thanks to neighbor Reid Serozi for coordinating this effort, and to everyone who contributed to the spring pickup. Start saving up for the October 26 pickup now!

MCAC events for spring and summer

The Mordecai Community Action Coalition continues to inform residents about issues impacting their neighborhoods and finding ways to offer input on those issues. In 2022, we hope to safely reconnect in person while still providing ways to connect electronically.  Our monthly programs will alternate between online meetings and “Community Connect” events where we visit neighborhood amenities to learn more about their mission.  Our spring and summer programs are mostly locked in as well as a few special events:

  • June 14                Community Connect event:  Fletcher Academy, tour and social gathering
  • June 26                Annual Mordecai community picnic on the grounds of the Mordecai House
  • July 4                   Neighborhood 4th of July Parade
  • August                 National Night Out (date TBD)

YOUR input is needed to shape the fall schedule.  What speakers would you like to hear from?  Which neighborhood partners would you like to visit and learn more about?  Please send your ideas to chair@mordecaicac.org.  If you’re interested in joining the leadership team, please indicate that as well and we’ll be in touch to see where you’d like to fit in.

SAVE SEABOARD TRAIN STATION
Preservation Group

Update

Community members formed a preservation group in January to promote efforts to save the historic Seaboard Train Station building (Logan's Garden Shop), which is affected by the rezoning application.

Members of the group met with representatives from Turnbridge and Parker Poe on April 5 and April 27. These were productive meetings where we discussed in detail the zoning conditions that are being proposed. Our group has responded with a letter addressing specific concerns.

If you'd like to get involved with efforts, please email savethestation@mordecaicac.org for more info. Our group is primarily communicating via Slack. We have an announcement email list as well.  Please join https://groups.google.com/g/saveseaboard if you would to receive updates.

The Mordecai CAC is the Mordecai Community Action Coalition. We are a coalition of multiple neighborhoods working together to provide ways for citizens to share information, meet each other, and take action in our community. Neighborhoods include: Pilot Mill, Oakdale, Mordecai, East Mordecai, North Person/Blount, Cotton Mill, Capitol Park, and part of Oakwood.

CO-CHAIR: We still need a new MCAC co-chair. This person will serve a two year term and be responsible for working with a partner to plan meeting agendas and lead the direction of the CAC. If you are interested or know of a neighbor that would be good for the job, we'd love to talk to you.

Please contact Merrilee Jacobson at chair@mordecaicac.org.

Join the MCAC Leadership Team!

The MCAC Leadership team is open and welcomes any resident of the Mordecai Community. Our core group of 15-20 neighbors communicates regularly to plan meetings and share ideas for citizen engagement. We'd love to have more neighbors get involved.  The leadership team is now communicating via a Slack Workspace.  All residents are welcome to join.

Email chair@mordecaicac.org for an invitation or click here to join!

Corner Pantry Items Needed!

Please keep our neighborhood Corner Pantry in mind for donations as you are able. It is at the corner of Glascock and Watauga Streets. We continue to welcome all to take what they need and leave what they can. The Corner Pantry has been utilized a great deal since being built, so please help us maintain inventory by dropping off non-perishable foods as you are able. Thanks!
