The First Decoration Day, 1865
In April 1865, soldiers with the 21st Regiment of US Colored Troops and the 55th Massachusetts Infantry discovered a mass grave at the Washington Race Course and Jockey Club (now Hampton Park) in Charleston, SC. Earlier that year, the race track had become an overflow facility for the notorious Andersonville prison camp in Georgia. 257 Union POWs had died of starvation, exposure, and disease and were flung into a mass grave. Discovery of the remains prompted the first Decoration Day on May 1.

The summer issue of VBC Magazine will start hitting mailboxes this week. It's free, and if you don't receive it, let us know, and we'll put one in the mail to you. We've just posted Pete's complete article on our VBC Blog for Memorial Day.

USAF Christens C-17 "The Spirit of the Candy Bomber"
Air Mobility Command spent two days last week celebrating the life and legacy of Col. Gail Halvorsen, the famous Berlin Airlift  “Candy Bomber.” This genuine American hero, who came on our VBC Happy Hour in 2020, died in February at age 101 and was inspiring to the very end. To honor Gail and his message of hope, the Air Force christened a C-17 Globemaster III as the “Spirit of the Candy Bomber.”
