Record cancer check referrals welcomed

The news of record numbers of patients coming forward for urological cancer checks has been welcomed by NHS South East’s Medical Director.

Urgent referrals for urological cancers across the South East reached an all-time high in March this year, with over 4300 people checked in that month alone. All four Cancer Alliances in the South East also saw an increase in their urological referrals during the same month. The surge in referrals regionally backs a national increase as almost 25,000 people (24,331) were checked across England during the same time period. The much welcomed increases come following a campaign launched by the NHS and Prostate Cancer UK in February.

NHS South East Medical Director Vaughan Lewis said:
“Lives are being saved thanks to a record-breaking number of patients making a decision to get themselves checked. Often, it won’t be cancer, but if it is finding it earlier makes it easier to treat.

“This is fantastic news, but we’re not complacent and we recognise there is always more we can do to encourage people to come forward, which is why we’re continually investing and working towards faster and earlier diagnosis across all cancers.”

The latest monthly performance figures also showed nationally the NHS saw the highest month on record for total cancer referrals, with more than a quarter of a million people checked in March alone – an almost 40% increase on the number of checks made in March 2020.

Digital Boards: Digital Download May 2022

As the sector emerges from the pandemic, new ways of working are required to support staff and service recovery. Trusts are looking at digital ways of working and quality improvement approaches to transform services. While sometimes considered separate, these approaches share many similarities. These include putting the user at the heart of service design and improvement, empowering teams, and having a test, learn and iterate model for change.

This digital download from NHS Providers' Digital Boards programme explores how boards can connect the dots and create allies in service transformation.

Putting patients first

A new report based on research and case studies of good practice in combatting digital health inequalities demonstrates the importance in working with patients who are digitally excluded.

Behold.AI wins UK’s most prestigious life science innovation award

Congratulations to Behold.AI  on winning Best UK Digital Health Solution at the Prix Galien awards ceremony on 12th May for their red dot® clinical analysis software. Pictured above are (L-R) Dr Tom Naughton, Chief Medical Officer & Consultant Radiologist, and Simon Rasalingham, CEO, Chairman & Cofounder, Behold.AI.

The red dot® artificial intelligence (AI) algorithm is a pioneering software as a medical device that can process adult (18+) frontal chest x-rays and flag a suspected nodule or mass to a radiologist within 30 seconds. Patients with chest x-rays that show potential lung cancer can then be prioritised for further examination and a same-day CT. With the technology, the time from initial scan to referral under current standards of care is reduced to 1 hour 40 minutes, supporting NHS Trusts to meet the 28-day cancer diagnosis target.

Nuala Foley, Portfolio Lead: Commercial and Partnerships, KSS AHSN, said "We at KSS AHSN are delighted to be able to congratulate Behold AI on their recent and much deserved success. It has been very rewarding to watch this company grow and develop in their ability to tackle real challenges facing the NHS through innovation and specifically AI. We look forward to their future development and supporting them in their journey."
