InTrans releases En Route, annual report for 2021 calendar year

2021 InTrans annual report on easel display
2021 reminded us to expect the unexpected and take satisfaction in meeting face-to-face when we could. Yet, wherever and however the Institute for Transportation (InTrans) staff and students chose to collaborate, their work continued as it always has—by translating research into action.

“This has been another unprecedented year, but InTrans took on the challenge. At the same time, it’s hard to think about progress in terms of years, especially because for many of us there is just so much more to do,” said Shauna Hallmark, InTrans Director. “We will certainly continue looking forward and envisioning the possibilities. But for now, just for today, let’s celebrate how far we have come.” More

CP Tech Center publishes Guide to Concrete Overlays of Asphalt Parking Lots

Many important factors considered for concrete overlays of asphalt pavements apply to overlays placed on both roadways and parking lots. However, some characteristics and considerations unique to parking lot overlays affect their design and construction—including fixed elevation points, traffic types and levels, and future changes in usage.
To address these types of overlay applications, the National Concrete Pavement Technology Center (CP Tech Center) recently published the second edition of its Guide to Concrete Overlays of Asphalt Parking Lots, a companion document to the fourth edition of the Guide to Concrete Overlays released last year. More

Spreadsheet tool aids in pavement analysis

Screenshot of IPAT displaying asphalt road condition
Current pavement condition measurement tools don’t offer much-needed context for how long a roadway will remain in a particular condition or how its performance may change over time. To provide that context, InTrans researchers developed a spreadsheet tool that can help local agencies to determine when preservation and/or rehabilitation are required for their agencies’ roadway sections.
The project led by principal investigator Halil Ceylan, director of InTrans’ Program for Sustainable Pavement Engineering and Research (PROSPER), developed the Iowa Pavement Analysis Techniques (IPAT) tool that can be used to estimate project- and network-level pavement performance and remaining service life or remaining service interval (RSL or RSI) for four pavement types. More

Research studies driveway assistance devices (DADs) as potential work zone option

Temporary traffic signal, temporary traffic signage, and a traffic drum deployed on a roadway shoulder
A recent research project produced by the Smart Work Zone Deployment Initiative (SWZDI) led by Michigan State University Professor Timothy Gates conducted a nationwide survey and subsequent field evaluation in Michigan related to the use of driveway assistance devices (DADs) in work zones to help determine the best practices for their design and develop guidelines for their deployment.
DADs are wirelessly connected with temporary traffic signals, which may be in a variety of configurations and typically with some additional signage, placed at each end of the lane closure and are coordinated with the signal timing plan for directional traffic on the major roadway. More
