Memorial Day Insights

Memorial Day is right around the corner, the unofficial start of the summer season with long weekend getaways, BBQ parties and store wide sales, or just taking the day off for rest and relaxation. However most Americans cherish and value the true meaning of this holiday. We all know that Memorial Day is the holiday that honors the men and women veterans who have died in the service to the United States.
This holiday is observed on the last Monday of May and is the time people visit cemeteries and memorials and decorate them with beautiful flowers and plants. Aside from paying respects and praying for our fallen service members heroes many city and towns across the United States host Memorial Day parades each year. The Town of Elkton will be holding a parade on 30 May 2022 (see below). There are also services at many veterans locations, please check with your local veterans administration for these locations.
The Memorial Day holiday is unique and special, with its own rules and traditions. Here are some of them:
  • A red poppy is worn on this day as a sign of remembrance, a tradition that began with World War 1 poem written by Lt. Col John McCrae and became popular after service members started wearing red poppies on their uniforms during World War II
  • Observance of the National Moment of Remembrance at 3:00pm local time on Memorial Day with Americans around the world required to pause for one minute and remember those who have died in the military service for the United States.
  • Flying the American Flag also have different rules on this day to honor fallen service members. The flag should be raised at half-staff from morning until noon, at noon it should be raised to full-staff until it is taken down at sunset. There are many more traditions surrounding this holiday.
Please visit the History website for more Memorial Day information. Memorial Day is one of the most meaningful holidays and we should preserve this tradition for future generations to come. Presented by Tom Hogate-President of Veteran's Outreach Ministries
