Summer blockbuster time!

Memorial Day weekend starts tomorrow, the traditional beginning of summer. At cinemas, it's the beginning of summer blockbuster season. This year it kicks off with a bang — or maybe a whoosh or a zoom. Something speedy in any case. If TOP GUN: MAVERICK, the long-awaited sequel to the 1986 original, is any indicator, it's going to be a great summer.

Charlotte O'Sullivan wrote in the London Evening Standard, "This is not a film I was expecting to like. ... I folded my arms and prepared for the worst. Two hours later, I was scribbling down words like 'Whoa!', 'Exciting!' and 'Bullseye!!'" Other critics mostly agree it's a thrilling ride with mind-blowing cinematography, and it outclasses the original.

We're keeping DOWNTON ABBEY: A NEW ERA and MEN, so you haven't missed them yet.

And we're celebrating an anniversary! Read on.

"Top Gun: Maverick pulls off a feat even trickier than a 4G inverted dive, delivering a long-belated sequel that surpasses its predecessor in wildly entertaining style."
Rotten Tomatoes critics' consensus

"A summer spectacular that proves that there’s still life left in the old ways, all while stoking, and satisfying, that familiar need for speed."

Happy anniversary to us!

After being dark for more than a year, Cinema Salem reopened for Memorial Day weekend 2021, showing two classics: 2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY and the original JUMANJI.

We sometimes joke that opening a cinema in the middle of a pandemic may not be the best recipe for success. But with your support it's working. Thanks to your enthusiasm, your donations, your ideas, your words of encouragement, and just the way you've showed up at the movies, it's been an exciting and gratifying year, We can't thank you enough.

We've made improvements, and more are coming soon. The conversion of the old cafe to Theater Four.is finally moving along well, after a lot of bureaucratic delay. We hope to have it ready to use by the end of June — a step we wanted to take before replacing seats in the other theaters. Theater Four will let us have three screens active as we close the other theaters, one at a time, to replace seats (and refinish floors and install new carpeting).

We also expect Theater Four to be a popular space for private rentals. We invite you to check out the work in progress. Just ask one of the staff (when they're not too busy, please).
