June at Curry Public Library

Summer Reading 2022 Is Just Around the Corner

Curry Public Library's free summer reading program "Read Beyond the Beaten Path," launches on June 18th. Read, track your progress, win prizes, and attend programs this summer! From parents reading to newborns to older adults and all ages in between, this program encourages reading and aims to bridge the learning gap that forms when children are not in school during the summer months. Library staff, community members, parents, and volunteers come together with entertainment, reading challenges, activities, crafts, and more.

Kickoff Summer Reading with us June 18 with a celebration! Drop-in to the library between 10am-2pm to sign up for Summer Reading, get a free t-shirt and supplies, enjoy a free lunch, and do crafts and other surprise activities. Visit www.currypubliclibrary.org to start tracking your reading on June 18, or register with us in person at the June 18 kickoff event. Also, mark your calendars for our Midway Summer Reading event on July 9th where we will have a station at Party in the Park (at Buffington Park in Gold Beach) from noon-4pm and for our End of Summer Reading Glow Party on Saturday, August 6th, drop-in between 10am-2pm.

Donor Julia Phillips poses with brand new bookshelves for the children's room.
New Bookshelves for the Children's Room

We are pleased to announce the arrival of three brand-new shelving units for our children's room here at Curry Public Library. The original shelves for this space made the move from when the library was located on Colvin Street, and were only about five inches deep. Many of the pictures books on these shelves hung dangerously over the edge, creating a safety hazard for the space. We hatched the idea for new shelving that would not only solve our safety problem, but would also be easy to use, create more space for books, and could be mobile to give us flexibility to open the room for family and children's programs like storytime. Julia Phillips, a library foundation board member and member of the Friends of Curry Public Library, and her husband John Connor generously donated the funds so we could make this dream a reality. Last week, our new shelving finally arrived. Not only does in fit in beautifully with the space and provide safe and abundant storage for children's books, but it can also be moved so we can reconfigure the room. We want to give a tremendous thank you to Julia Phillips and John Connor for their donation and ongoing support of the library. Next time you are in the library, take a peek at our new shelving in the children's room!
Adult Programs: Something for Everyone in June

This June adult programs include the return of a couple of old favorites, a few completely new-to-the-library wellness offerings, and several opportunities to see authors speak. We will be kicking off the month with an Open Mic Night on Thursday, June 2nd at 5:30pm. This is your chance to share your work (poetry, prose, or song) with the public, and to support others as they perform. Sign-ups are on a first-come, first-served basis and will start at 5:20pm. On Thursday, June 9th at 5:30pm, Cookbook Club is back with our first event in over two years. Here's how this works: simply prepare a recipe that includes the featured ingredient (this month is strawberries), bring the dish along with a copy of the recipe, and share with others potluck-style as we talk about cooking and socialize. All levels of cooks are welcome!

June will bring two weekly wellness offerings, both new to the library. On Fridays in June from 10am-11am come try Restorative Qigong. Qigong is a practice of exercises to optimize energy within the body, mind, and spirit. Facilitator Chris Van Schaack enjoys practicing Qigong with others, and wants to see if there is enough interest to start up a regular group. The program is free and open to adults. If there is interest, we will look at offering more Restorative Qigong in coming months. Another option for those looking for wellness opportunities: a group of community members interested in meditation has begun to meet on Saturdays at 2pm at the library conference room. Like the Watercolor Meetup Group and Writers Group, this group is free and open to interested community members.

Last but not least, for those with a hankering to see authors speak in-person again, we have two opportunities for you in June. On June 30, join Ashland author Sue DeMarinis at Curry Public Library for a discussion of her book, The Station Master’s Wife : A Scandalous Life Exposed. After the presentation, the author will have books available to purchase and sign. If you're up for a trip up or down the coast to one of our neighbor libraries, on Friday, June 17, Coastline Title Wave Author Michael P. Branch will be speaking at Chetco Community Public Library in Brookings at 2pm and then later that evening at Port Orford Public Library at 7pm. Michael P. Branch is the award-winning writer and humorist of How to Cuss in Western and On the Trail of the Jackalope.

Wondering when to pull out the lawn chairs for outdoor movies at the library? They will start in July! Stay tuned for more details.
Tech Lab Staff Host Creatives' Mixer & Announce Summer Programs Schedule

Calling all creatives! Join us at 11am on Saturday, June 25 in the Meeting Hall to meet other local creative people across a variety of interests, to ask questions, talk shop, and share stories. This meet-up will be facilitated by Brodey Carpenter, Tech Lab Coordinator. We're aiming to create a network for social and technical support for the artists and makers on the Southern Oregon Coast. Examples of makers include (but are not limited to): programmers, tinkers, engineers, visual effects, videographers, metal fabricators, blacksmiths, photographers, woodworkers, builders, painters, sculptors, jewelry makers, potters, tailors, writers, graphic designers, anyone who uses equipment in the tech lab, and more. Please help us plan for this event: RSVP to techlab@cplib.net and let us know you're planning to attend and your primary making method!

The Tech Lab has also just released their 2022 Summer Program Schedule. For a complete list of those programs, click here to visit the Tech Lab & Makerspace webpage.
Did you know? A Little About the Library's Magazine Collection

Curry Public Library has always provided a great selection of print magazine subscriptions. Increasingly, managing this collection has become more and more challenging. Every year we lose a handful of subscriptions as the print subscriptions are canceled by the publisher. Initially, we tried to find 1:1 replacements. For example, if a magazine that focused on physical fitness went out of business, we tried to find a different physical fitness magazine. This year we are taking a different approach, and giving each staff member the opportunity to make a "Staff Pick" subscription. This may mean less mainstream publications, but we are excited about sharing our interests, and we hope that this will result in a renaissance for our magazines. Our staff picks will be arriving over the coming months, but please come check out our first new subscription, Lapham's Quarterly. This magazine, picked by Jeremy Skinner, has a historical focus, with each issue addressing a topic of current interest and concern—war, religion, money, medicine, nature, crime—by bringing up to the microphone of the present the advice and counsel of the past. Current issues of all of our magazines can be read while in the library. Back issues can be checked out just like library books and brought home to read.
Perry Kishaba Named Afterschool Hero!

We want to take a moment to give a huge shout out to our ASCEND after school program's Perry Kishaba. Perry was recently recognized as an "Afterschool Hero" by the Oregon ASK Network for going above and beyond in supporting the youth and families he serves, and for being passionate and dedicated to the field of expanded learning. We couldn't say it much better than that! Perry is an exceptional advocate for kids and for learning. We're lucky to have him working for the library and in our community. Thank you for all you do, Perry.

Solar Power Coming to the Library

When the library expanded its facility in 2018, the architect and the library board of directors were thinking not just about the spaces the library needed, but how the library could continue to afford to operate those spaces in the future, and be a community leader in sustainable energy development. It was clear that energy costs were going to continue to rise, and that sustainable energy should be a part of our plan. During construction, the electricians added the proper electrical panels and conduit, and the builders installed the proper bracing for solar power roof panels. Since 2018 and the completion of the construction, the library has been saving money and applying for grants. We are happy to announce that this summer contractors will begin installing solar panels and battery storage, cutting our power bill by about 15%. This is the first step in our larger plan to add more solar panels on the library properly and eventually have all of our electricity supplied via solar panels. This means more books, more programs, and the ability to operate during electrical grid outages. If you are interested in learning more about our planning process and the technology, please contact us at currylibrary@cplib.net.

Book and Bake Sale a Smashing Success
A special message from Friends of Curry Public Library Book & Bake Sale Chair, Sandy Grummon

YAHOO! The 2022 Great Book & Bake Sale is completed, and I just received the final numbers from our Treasurer, Jeanie Knowles. We exceeded our all-time money-making record for the sale by $200.00, just shy of $5,000.00. Approximately 85 people showed up for the $2.00 Bag Sale Monday and spent (and donated) a total of $185.00. There was a group waiting for the doors to open at 10:00 a.m., and there was a steady crowd of shoppers until we closed the sale at noon.

An exceptional group of 24 volunteers boxed the left-over books, hauled the books to waiting trailers, folded and moved 53 tables, and broke down cardboard boxes. It took exactly 2 hours and 33 minutes (61.25 man-hours) to complete the task…something that took 217 hours to set up! It was HARD WORK, and I am in awe of the energetic, uncomplaining folks who spent a good chunk of their Memorial Day (and the only sunny day we had all weekend!) at the library, working their tails off. A great big THANK YOU to all of them!

I’ve said it before, but I would be remiss in not again thanking the large group of volunteers who spent four days setting up the sale, and unpacking and sorting books.  There was also a friendly cadre of Friends who worked the sale itself, keeping the tables neat and orderly, tallying up book purchases, ringing up sales. Your efforts and enthusiasm made shopping our Book Sale a positive experience for our customers.

The Bake Sale portion of the event, co-chaired by Dianne Daniels and Sue Peters, involved recruiting bakers, offering a wide variety of baked goods, packaging/displaying everything beautifully, and cashiering. Thank you to the dedicated group who pulled this off, despite selling EVERYTHING on Saturday, and having to rush home and bake enough to have something to sell on Sunday. The Bake Sale brought in close to $600.00 of the $4,847.00 total. It’s a good thing our customer base had a sweet tooth!
