Super mild vibes

What befits a super mild weekend with temperatures in the high teens and low 20s? Well, I'd say some stirred drinks, a glass of red wine, a bock beer - maybe a light sweater. It's hard to say, really. If the sun pops out, it warms right up. Today, right as we opened, the sun came out and I quickly grabbed some records (I'm totally lying, I had to use Spotify for this one) and played a medley of sun songs: Here Comes the Sun (The Beatles), It's the Sun (Polyphonic Spree), Sun is Shining (Bob Marley), Here Comes Sunshine (Grateful Dead). Just a bit of off-the-cuff fun. No big deal.

Who's spinning records this weekend?

Thursday (26.05) - DJ Johannes Fleck reels off all the Eel classics and Hannes blends up the piña coladas to wash them down. Expect snake jazz, more snake jazz and mostly snake jazz, but also Steely Dan, Rupert Holmes, Bill withers, Sade, Grace Jones, The Meters, Curtis Mayfield and whatever else. 19:00 - 22:00.

Friday (27.05) - DJ Sebastian Etzkorn slaps the dusty sides down in his triumphant return to the Electric Eel as the musical accompaniment for the soon to be revealed (see below) art happening . Hip-hop, soul, dirty funk, reggae, it's all going down. 19:00 - 22:00.

Saturday (28.05) - DJ Chris Vinylist employs a jazz, rare groove, soul, funk and hip-hop approach to his turntable game. 19:00 - 22:00. (Check him out with his "Underground Vibes" on Radio Querfunk, the second Sunday of the month, 17:00 - 18:00)

Vernissage: Koch & James (27.5)

Koch and James, otherwise known as my good friends Joe and Andrea, are an artist duo living here in Karlsruhe. Their work covers a broad range of style, which includes but is not limited to static media. There is a bit of a cheekiness from time to time, and often their work has something to say. Their vernissage on 27.5 at the Eel is an invitation for all to join in a celebration of color - a collection of conceptual, yet playful works that they describe as an antidote to a particularly monochrome period that they'd found themselves in. Perhaps subconsciously triggered by the change of season? Who knows. I suppose that's what we can talk about tomorrow. That and much else as we imbibe tasty drinks and share in the company of our creative friends. I am so happy to welcome Joe and Andrea to the Eel for their debut at our humble venue. 19:00 - 22:00.

A Very Short Story: German Grape Ale

"I had nothing planned for Father's Day, and I hadn't planned on drinking. But then I saw this and was so happy I came here today", said the wine maker who happened to find our German grape ale on our menu. And it's this sort of feedback that gives me some personal validation for taking a few risks and investing in the odd off-the-wall product. My only hope is that someone enjoys it. And today it was enjoyed. Come on and try it yourself.

London Stories (Black Forest Bar Cup)

Electric Eel is proud to represent our region in London at the Black Forest Bar Cup "London Stories". I will be there to act as emcee/moderator as we introduce the flavors of the Black Forest to London's bartending community.

When: Monday, June 13, 2022 // 17:00 - 23:00
Where: Juno Rooms (67-69 Watling St, London EC4M 9DD

For the whole month of June, we will partner with our friends at Santo's Cocktail Bar and MAPA to raise money for Los Catacombos, a unique social project that works to get kids off the streets and teach them musical craft and social participation while building self-esteem through making music as a group, regardless of age, denomination or nationality.

Each bar has created a special cocktail for this campaign - all three will be available in all three bars. With each drink sold, we will donate €5. Our goal is €4,000 in combined donations. If we can achieve that, our charity partner (Leo-Club Karlsruhe) will match that €4,000 to make it a tasty 8 grand. And if we can get that far, our friends at Black Pan Drinks, who have sponsored the spirits in each of our drinks, will put a €2,000 cherry on top to make it an even €10,000!!

And what's the best part of this? We can try to drink someone else's problems away for a change. But all kidding aside, June is our month to make a bit of a difference in some young people's lives. So, please join us!
