Past Commander’s Log

Ahoy everyone!

This will be the last Masthead until September and since we have no incoming Commander, I thought that I would still add my thoughts to this edition.

It was so nice to see all the familiar faces (and a few new ones!) at our AGM and BBQ.  FCYC grilled us some yummy hamburgers, Wee Wong brought his usual supply of fresh prawns and crab while many other members brought sides and desserts.   What a feast! See further in the Masthead for some pictures of the evening.

I would like to thank PMD Commander, Guy Cooper, for attending and swearing in the Bridge. A big thank you to everyone who is remaining. Another big thank you to those who are leaving the Bridge – Dave Atchison, Twyla Graeme, Carol Humphrys, Roger Middleton, and Terry Friesen. You are always welcome to return anytime! And finally, all the people involved in the Boating 2/3 online courses during Covid were issued with certificates honouring their contributions.  Teaching and tutoring in an online environment has many challenges and we are lucky to have these people in our Education department.  Many thanks to Peter Girling, Peter Bennett, Sylvia Steede, Mary-Ann Isinger, Art Rendell, Sarah Burwood, Ralph Herten, Paul Heeney,    Ron Kothlow and myself, Elizabeth Zygmunt.

For those who were unable to attend the AGM, check out the VPSboat.org website for the reports.

I am disappointed that a Squadron our size was unable to supply a full Bridge for the coming year. As you will read by the Merit Marks awarded for the last 2 years further in this issue, it is amazing the number of people who have contributed years to CPS. I find that level of volunteerism absolutely incredible! However, it is time for other people to start stepping up to the plate. Our Squadron is only as good as what the members make it. Please consider giving some of your time to keep the Vancouver Squadron running. Don’t feel that you have enough experience? – don’t worry – there are people who will help guide you in the various roles. The Education department is a great place to start. I anticipate that we will need both in-class and online instructors and tutors/proctors for next Fall. Helping people become safe and knowledgeable boaters is very satisfying on many levels.

Vancouver hosted a successful Flare Return Day on May 07 at Steveston Marine. Due to popular demand, we are hosting a second one on Saturday June 18 at the same location. If you are thinking of dipping your toe into volunteering, this could be a good place to start. Whether you come for 2 hours or the entire day, any help will be much appreciated. Don’t forget to dispose of your expired flares and buy some replacements at the same time.

This weekend will be our first Squadron cruise in 2 years! I hope to get some pictures into this Masthead before it goes to press. I am thanking Ingrid and Deano in advance for planning this. Do you have some ideas for a get-together? Let people know where you are heading. LaFortuna will be flying the past-commanders flag – if you see her, come over and say hello! I never did find out what the significance of the three tridents is for CPS!

Next weekend, June 4, will be the Predicted Log Race which has been organized by Dennis Steeves. Besides being a fun event, this will be a good chance to practise your cruising skills. We will have to wait until September to see those photos.

Our June Squadron night should be interesting.  Mark Leblanc from hydrographic services will be talking about the move away from paper charts to full digitalization.  I am sure that there will be lots of questions. See you at the FCYC on June 20th.

Wishing everyone a safe and enjoyable summer both on and off the water!

Happy Boating,

Elizabeth Zygmunt

Join Vancouver Squadron’s social night on Monday June 20, 2022 at 7:30 pm for a presentation on CHS transformation by
Mark LeBlanc, Director of the Canadian Hydrographic Service, Pacific Region

The Canadian Hydrographic Service is transforming our services. We want to be safer and more efficient and offer the best products we can for all mariners.

Our digital products will support safe navigation through improved vector based Electronic Navigation Charts, digital publications, and paper charts updated through a subscription service.

We will also deliver real time tide and current information available direct to the user.

Mark will be happy to answer all your questions and gather feedback to ensure CHS products and services meet the needs of all mariners. Mark has been Director of the Pacific Region since 2020 and was previously Manager of Navigation Products to Services. Mark is also a professional mariner having served in the Royal Canadian Navy for 10 years.

Report on the Annual General Meeting, Change of Watch & BBQ held on May 16, 2022 at the False Creek Yacht Club

For the first time in 2 years, Vancouver was able to hold the AGM/CoW in person.  To celebrate, we waived the price of the bbq as a thank you to everyone.   Though the 2022-23 Bridge is on the small side, everyone present had a great time.

Merit Marks

Finally, after 2 years, we have been able to enter and thus award Merit Marks. A member is awarded a merit mark when they have contributed more that 20 volunteer hours in a given year.

The following people received Merit Marks for the 2019-2020 year and/or the 2020-2021 year. The number of years each has been volunteering is also listed.

Congratulations to all of you and thank you for your continuing commitment and generous support.

Let’s also not forget that there are many other people who volunteer their time for various Squadron activities but who do not reach the number of hours for a merit mark. We are also very thankful for their help and support.

In the words of Winston Churchill, “We make a living by what we do, but we make a life by what we give.

The Bowen Island Cruise Friday May 27 to Sunday May 29

A weekend of fun, conversation and food on Bowen Island!

Views from Dorman Point

What a lovely weekend for our first rendezvous in 2 years!

LaFortuna arrived first on the Friday. Her engines purred from False Creek to the entrance of our slip at Union Steamship Marina when, in concert with a very strong gust of wind, one engine conked out with us heading dangerously close to a parked sailboat. Quick action on Pierre’s and the wharfinger’s part avoided a collision and got LaFortuna safely docked in her slip. Phew! After a lovely walk in Crippen Park, a frantic text and call from Ingrid on Lets Go. Their boat had just lost her port engine and was taking on water. Luckily, they quickly got the water issue under control and continued with only one. The wind was still gusting, so Pierre used our tender as a ‘tug’ to help push Deano onto their slip. Next was Jana’s turn to navigate the wind gusts! Thankfully she didn’t lose an engine since she only has one! Some minor complications, and she was also safely in. Time to celebrate with an impromptu happy hour followed by a lovely dinner at Doc Morgans. Saturday was a day of working on engines, going for walks and working on potluck dishes. David and Marlaine arrived by ferry in the afternoon just in time for Happy Hour on the docks. Mark arrived on Pretext and just slipped into his slip with no dramatics. After happy hour, we had our Saturday night bbq in the ‘tower’ at Union Steamship Marina. Deano was the bbq master and sorts of wonderful sides had been prepared and brought. No one went home hungry. This was followed by a night-cap on Lets Go before all the tired boaters retired to their berths.

BRIDGE POSITIONS OPEN!  SEEKING VOLUNTEERS!

As Elizabeth mentioned in her Commander's Report, our AGM and Change of Watch are happening on May 16th. Though most Bridge members will remain in their positions, there are many positions that are open, such as:
Commander
Executive Officer
Education Officer
Assistant Education Officer
Masthead Editor
Programs Officer

Volunteering can be fun, a great way to meet people and an opportunity to learn new skills.

Please consider volunteering for any of the above-mentioned positions.

Please contact any current Bridge member to let them know that you are interested in keeping Vancouver Squadron strong and vibrant in the years ahead.
Do you have any Stories?
...that you'd like to share?

If you feel the urge to put pen to paper (or fingers to keyboard, as the case may be), and have a story you'd like to share with fellow members, we'd like to read it!

Funny stories, lesson-learned stories, great cruising stories, you-won't-believe-what-happened stories...

Please send any short masterpieces to
pro@vpsboat.org and we'll try to include them in the Masthead when we have space.

Happy writing... and boating!

Membership Renewal

A reminder to members to renew your membership!

In order to renew, you must log into the cps-ecp website.  If you have forgotten your password, you can create a new one.  If you no longer use the email with which you made your profile, you will need to contact Moe to forward to National.  For security reasons, only the member can change their email.   If you forgot or ‘gave up’ last year when trying to renew your membership on the new system, you will not be penalized.   Just pay and renew for 2022 and you will be ‘good to go’ for the year.   Another note, the system is very fussy, and every box must be filled in order for you to proceed.   I know that, for some members, renewing has been a frustrating experience, but it is getting easier all the time as the various glitches are being found and worked out.

Remember that the ‘head of the household’ renews for the entire household.   Lifetime members must still renew at 0.00.     Any questions?    Any problems?  Ask our membership officer, Moe Forrestal  smo-vancouver@cps-ecp.org
