Welcome to the latest 4PLAS newsletter, this month we would like to highlight the our 4TECH® Polyamide grades developed for use in Thermoplastic Elastomer (TPE) overmoulding applications.
Overmoulded parts are made in two operations. The base moudling (in this case 4TECH® PA) is made as per standard injection moulding. The parts are then loaded into a second tool where the outer material (in this case ELASTRON TPE) is moulded onto the base. Typical overmoulding applications include seals, gaskets and soft touch tool handle grips overmoulded onto a polyamide base.
TPE's generally give little chemical bond when overmoulded on to Polyamide, so lugs and recesses are generally incorporated to give mechanical bonding instead. However this rarely provides 100% sealing against fluid ingress in a gasket or other seal type application.

As part of the continuing development of our 4TECH® range of high performance technical compounds, we have an ever increasing range of unfilled and glass fibre filled PA6 & PA66 grades which include bonding additives to provide far better chemical adhesion between the base and overmould.
Commercial applications include switches and pipe couplings, where the 4TECH® PA/TPE bond provides excellent sealing properties that standard PA overmoulded with the same TPE's failed to achieve.
