Rd 7 ANU Griffins @ Cooma

By Robbie Evans

Agenda:

6:45am - Griffs arrive at South nice and early. The boys are repping corporate attire. The girls bus left without us, I thought we were supposed to be one team, why are they always so exclusive?
7am - Depart South oval and begin the road trip of a life time. Aidan is wearing odd shoes wtf, he thinks he's cool. He's not.
7:30am - Clint's story time. Trauma is detected in crocodile teeth, who knew!?
8:30am - Arrival in Cooma
8:31am - 10 boys walk in and start ordering coffee at a local cafe
8:32am - 10 boys break the hearts of local cafe. Walk out with no coffee, so heartless
9am - Find the right cafe and eat breakfast. Yum
9:45am - Depart cafe for the bus
9:50am - I'm late for the bus, must keep lips moist. Clearly moist lips is more important than umpiring the Buzz. Sorry Benny.
10am - Arrive at Cooma oval, so much fog I can't see the other side of the oval. Cricket pitch in the middle of the ground. Could kick a goal from the centre square. What kind of club is this!?
10am-4pm - The griffs bring home 3 awesome wins, vibes are high! But Gus paid a holding the ball free kick against me

Some notable mentions:
⁃ Hads clutch from 40m out twice in the last quarter.
⁃ Mitch McGovern sent to Batemans best player and locks him down.
⁃ Vards kicks from 50m out on a tight angle with the game in the balance and slots it (oh wait it was out on the full)
⁃ The Buzz are the best goal umpires ever, too drunk to know what happened twice, but two goals to ANU.
⁃ Gus reverse decision against Batemans and denies a certain goal.

4:30pm - Load up the bus and head to Cooma RSL. If it's anything like their football oval it'll probably be sub-par. I'm pleasantly surprised, the RSL is actually a respectable venue. But Batemans Bay are not respectable at all. Everyone has injuries.
5:30pm - Load up the bus to Bredbo. I sneak onto the backline bus with the rest of the cool backliners. They embrace me as one of their own.
5:35pm - Tuanny demands the bus driver stops at the bottle shop. Buys two slabs! Tuanny you are my hero!
6pm - Arrive in Bredbo, it's so cold!
6:30pm - Pub owner challenges Sam and Clint to lift a pumpkin. $10 entry fee. Four pack of cruisers up for Grabs. The pumpkin is HUGE. But the boys pull through, best $10 ever spent. Well done lads!
7pm - Time to get back on the bus. VP sends a message to the group chat, "anyone gets left behind, that's not my problem". (See Buzzies grifftale for reference)
I'm demoted from the backline bus. Sad. BUT what a trip home. Dozer joined the bus, what a legend. Gus channels his inner Taylor Swift and belts out the tunes. Gus can sing! I suppose I forgive you for paying the free kick against me now.
8pm - Arrive back at South.
8:30pm - Griffs head to Hellenic. Bulk long island ice teas thank you.
10pm - The boys go to support fellow Griff and rap legend himself KP Hydes. KP you hypnotise me with your late night disco. I'll let you in to my house any time.
11pm - I think I'm pretty tired. What a big day! Time for bed. Good night all. Thanks for a wonderful day.

Boot Scooten Baby

By Sienna Gray

Howdy partners,

When you think of inspiring, breath-taking, symphonic stallions, you think of the Buzzies and after this game, even the tuggers agree with that. This game proved that the Buzzies work like a well-oiled machine and all the encouragement we need is that we get to wear cowboy hats and shoot vodka pistols after the game.

The Buzzies saddled up and got on their way to our ranch for the day. Living up to the name, Coomas Snowy Oval welcomed us with an eerie fog that looked like the baseball scene in Twilight. That didn’t stop us as we strapped on our (cowboy) boots and headed out for one of the rootinest tootinest warmups of the season. When the game began, we climbed the saddle and we were ready for the ride. It was a tight first quarter with great defences on both sides, coming out with an even 6-6. To be honest, I didn’t see much of this quarter with my head being sandwiched between a couple of the tugger’s players, but I heard it was truly eventful. The second quarter came in quickly with some goals and behinds being secured, however we weren’t comfortable just yet.

The sun was up and so were we as we threw the whole kit and caboodle into the third quarter. To put it lightly, the third quarter was a hoedown throw down as Sheriff Lynch clearly had a snake in her boot, kicking a massive 7 goals. If you wanted to find Stallion Summerhayes, all you needed to look for was the ball as she was on it like a thoroughbred the entire game. Chilli Hill and Woody Michelson were like bulls seeing red when they flattened any tuggers that dared to be in their way, all while hitting every mark. Mustang Ballard and Woody Battersby tore the tuggers ruck down to pass it on to Giddy Beerans and Dusty Scott-Hickie for the cleanest midfield plays. Haw McConville made a cracker of a debut, always being on the ball but never letting the tuggers take her down.

The fourth quarter was a sweet one thanks to the 110% efforts put in by Yee Moody, Woody Liddy-Corlett and Howdy Higgs. As the game came to an end with a stunning score of 73-6, the Buzzies were on a high (also because we knew what was coming later that night). The day continued with getting into our everyday western wear, stepping into town to enjoy Cooma’s abundance of pie shops and watching the ressies and seniors smash out their games. Big appreciations to Snowy Oval for organising some horses to gallop next to the field and really get us into boot scootin’ character. We mounted our horses and galloped to the Ex-services club where we enjoyed a lovely fried food spread that tickled the tastebuds delightfully. The night heated up as we made our way to the Bredbo Inn to have some bevvies and witness a gigantenormous pumpkin being heaved up for the remarkable prize of a 4 pack of cruisers.  If you weren’t on the small bus back to Canberra, I feel sorry for you, it was a movie, enough said. A big thanks to Yee Shalders for informing me that Chili Rasche and Pony Dean stumbled out of Bredbo Inn onto the road waving their cowboy hats as they were nearly left behind. Luckily, they found two horses and trotted back to Hellenic to meet the rest of the Buzzies and finish the night off.

Overall, the day was a hog killin’ time and definitely one for the books. See ya next year Cooma

Yeehaw,
Dusty O’Cholera

Cooma Kittens

The Start of the Day

This Griff Tale began bright and early on Saturday morning where everyone gathered at South to board the busses. The men’s teams were ecstatic to depart at 7am so we could arrive in warm, tropical Cooma 90 minutes prior to the start of the Women’s game (despite taking separate busses).

The Match

Both 4th grade teams went into the match with four wins for the season and we knew it was going to be a grind. Jono Dean had his 150th game for the club and the team knew they had to get a win for this special occasion. The Ressie’s started on fire, managing to close the 1st quarter up 27-0. This was led by Wags with two surprisingly massive goals. Who saw that coming?! Second quarter the Cats came scratching back and managed to put 20 points on the board, compared to the Ressie’s 9. The third quarter showcased the Ressie’s working like a finely oiled machine, piling on another 25 points whilst conceding only 6. This was enough to take the match out of reach of our worthy opponent. No Griffins could be criticized in this game, with all efforts to be commended.

Match Highlights
  • Ed Lowe putting his body on the line for a mark and getting crumpled like a wet paper towel
  • Dylan Bushnell managing to be in every position on the field at once despite his age
  • Eden Bradford giving us his finest MasterChef demonstration, trying to turn Boyall’s head into mashed potato with a thunderous falcon
  • Big man Thorney proving his worth as a protective Captain – giving off a slight shoulder bump to the unkind gentleman giving Tuanny a scruff up
  • Rich Davis sticking in the dagger with a set shot in the 4th quarter whilst being the most handsome man on the field
The Bus Trip

Well, aren’t we all glad that Lach Smith clarified there was NO ALCOHOL TO BE CONSUMED ON THE BUS? That could have gotten out of hand! I personally couldn’t imagine a bus trip full of rum, vapes, champagne, cruisers, vodka pistols, UE Boom thrusting and Gus Bus (Hilly) singing Wonderwall better than Oasis. Let alone Comanchero Pini jumping with joy after a successful pumpkin lift from Clint Beale & Sam Crutcher.

Who let the cat out of the bag? It appeared that one traitorous stray kitten managed to claw his way aboard the Griff Express and make his way back to Canberra after realizing that no other club is as good as the Griffs. Once the bus arrived back at south, some club members decided to call it quits whilst others battled their way into the night. I couldn’t think of a more wholesome way to end the perfect day than a 2am griffcest at Knightsbridge <3.

The end.
