Dear <<First Name>>,

Earlier this week, my ministry announced $3.75 million to graduate students at 10 of British Columbia’s post-secondary institutions. Building a stronger B.C. means investing in ways to make life more affordable for people so they can access the education and training needed for in-demand jobs. With B.C. Graduate Scholarships, graduate students will be able to spend more time focusing on learning and building the skills they need to access opportunities.

This week, we highlight the positive contributions of active people in the Burnaby-Deer Lake community!

Meet Claire Wang, a local Burnaby resident for over 20 years! She’s a Simon Fraser University graduate and a Chartered Professional Accountant that has worked with Burnaby Hospital Foundation for over 4 years. Very recently, she became the Vice President of Finance and Administration for Burnaby Hospital Foundation!

Burnaby Hospital Foundation is a 70-year old fundraising organization for Burnaby Hospitals, with the goal to provide outstanding health care, support health care workers, and provide new technologies and infrastructure for all generations. They have achieved a lot of accomplishments, one of the recent being the funding of Burnaby Hospital’s redevelopment, and funding for a brand new B.C. cancer center at Burnaby Hospital.

As someone who cares about the quality of healthcare, Claire became Vice President, since she has the skills and passion to make Burnaby Hospital Foundation grow. She also wanted to encourage the diverse backgrounds of people in her community, in hopes that her actions can make a big difference and inspire more people to be active.

Claire, as Vice President, takes on the responsibility of Burnaby Hospital Foundation’s finances, as well as leading human resources and IT activities. She also engages in diverse community groups and events that Burnaby Hospital Foundation hosts, such as the Melody of Love Concert. It’s important for Claire and the Burnaby Hospital Foundation team to interact with these groups to not only raise financial support, but to also have fun and celebrate the community’s work.

Seeing the community groups that Claire works with come together to raise awareness and funds to improve Burnaby Hospitals is very rewarding for her. It’s moments like these that make Claire and the Burnaby Hospital Foundation team determined to give back to the community and make the improvement of Burnaby hospitals better for everyone.

Burnaby Hospital Foundation has many upcoming events that you can attend, such as this year’s Chinese Cultural Heritage Festival, the Burnaby Lake Run, and more. If you would like to attend these events and support Burnaby Hospital Foundation, check out https://www.bhfoundation.ca/events/upcoming/. You can also donate directly to Burnaby Hospital Foundation at https://www.bhfoundation.ca/donate/.

Claire encourages people with diverse backgrounds to stay active in their communities, and to put themselves out there. It’s important to be brave and go with your passion; it’s what led her to where she is today!

Fun fact: Claire is a mom with 2 kids, both of her children being passionate dancers. Claire herself is also a dancer, as she knows how to do ballet! She will challenge Royal Academy of Dance (RAD) ballet Grade 8 and Intermediate Foundation exams in a month.
Here are some things I'd like to share with you from the past week:

New accessible playgrounds for children and families

For far too long, parents were burdened with fundraising to replace old and unsafe school playgrounds or build new playgrounds. Unfortunately, this meant that children in wealthier communities were more likely to have safer and newer playgrounds.

To ensure that children throughout the province have safe places to play, our government created the Playground Equipment Program in 2018 to build accessible and modern playground equipment across B.C. Since 2018, we have invested at least $5 million each and built 231 new playgrounds across B.C, benefiting 57,000 students.

Playgrounds are a big part of our children’s lives. Students look forward to the free time they spend on the playground every day, and they learn how to share and problem solve while playing together. And playing outside also helps kids focus and learn more effectively in the classroom.

Japanese Canadian legacies are honoured as part of redressing historical wrongs

As we work to dismantle systemic racism in British Columbia, we must recognize and honour survivors of historically racist policies and treatment, invest in healing, and work to address enduring harms. That’s why our government is providing $100 million to enhance cultural, educational, and health initiatives that will support Japanese Canadians and survivors of B.C.’s internment era.

This funding will provide enhanced health and wellness programs for survivors and their descendants, and restore heritage sights to honour the legacies of Japanese Canadians.

B.C. and Modern Treaty Nations renew implementation commitment

Advancing meaningful reconciliation in British Columbia means working to strengthen and support communities and Indigenous rights through the effective implementation of Modern Treaties. Through collaborative action with the Alliance of BC Modern Treaty Nations, we’ve established a framework that will allow our government to work closely with Modern Treaty Nations in order to effectively advance these priorities.

This Shared Priority Framework will support our efforts in fulfilling Treaty Rights and obligations, involving Modern Treaty Nations in policy and legislative initiatives, and enhancing approaches to Treaty implementation in British Columbia.

Province increasing support for people with serious mental illnesses

We’re working to support people and families across British Columbia by funding services for those who are affected by serious and persistent mental illnesses. A $5 million investment in the British Columbia Schizophrenia Society (BCSS) will enhance support access for people with schizophrenia, psychosis, and other persistent mental illnesses.

Funding will also support increased access to services for people in rural, remote, and Indigenous communities.
