Three Unique Events Coming Soon

Qigong is a Chinese healing art that uses breathing, movement, visualization and focused intention to circulate qi (energy/life force). It helps revitalize the body and supports well-being. This style of qigong features continuous gentle movements, tapping to awaken qi meridian lines, and guided meditative imagery to mirror the way nature flows.

Lisa created the Spring Qigong practice to help you harmonize with the beginning of a new cycle of seasons. Traditional Chinese medicine associates Spring with elemental Wood: a pattern of rebirth and growth, embodied in functions of the liver & gallbladder. It is an auspicious time to support physical and mental detoxification, and align with the yang energies of expansion and inspiration.

The workshop will conclude with a 15-minute sound bath, where participants can luxuriate in vibratory delight as Lisa fills the room with crystal singing bowls, chimes, Native American flute and vocal tones.

This workshop will be held IN PERSON AT THE STUDIO. Studio Covid policies apply: masks for all, one-time proof of vaccination by email or in-person.

Cost: $30, members save 15%

Life can often feel so busy, with an increasing number of tasks and things on our 'to do' lists. It's easy to get drawn away from that which is truly important. We are often reaching out to fulfill ever increasing demands, but rarely have time and attention to center and come back to ourselves.

In this workshop, we will take time to explore the experience of centering. Through both breath and yoga postures, we will come into relationship with our physical core through the movement of pulling: drawing towards, bringing in, and gathering. Then yoga nidra (meditative relaxation) offers a method for connecting to our core selves, our true nature that abides behind all the fussing and fretting of our worldly lives.

This workshop is part five of a monthly series exploring the 5 Essential Movements. Each month we have been exploring a different movement as it manifests in our bodies, breath, the season, and other meanings as they unfold. Our final workshop of the series will be:

  • June 20 - Return to Yielding, taking it in, resting in satisfaction, integration.

Held in Zoom Studio 1. Each workshop will be recorded. The recording will be available for two weeks after each workshop.

(You can email us to purchase the recording of a past workshop.)

Cost: $30/workshop, $160/all six

99% of our ancestors lived in paleolithic times and spent most of their lives outdoors.
It's only in the last few millenia that humans began spending so much time indoors, and only in the last 30 years that we became so fixated on screens. The iPhone is just 15 years old!

Our bodies and minds evolved in relationship to the wild world, but most of us spend most of our time in a built environment that deprives us of the sensory experiences our bodies expect. Many preventable disease arises from a mismatch between the needs of our animal bodies and the practices of modern life.

So, spending time outdoors is more than a nice pastime. It is an essential nutrient for our health and well-being that many are sorely lacking. But even if enjoy walking our playing sports outdoors, we're often distracted by other goals. It's rare to really BE in nature with our full attention.

Though it might seem bizarre to our ancestors, our alienated age calls for deliberate practices of reconnection with the living Earth. Nick Beem has recently trained as a Mindful Outdoor Guide, and he's eager to share this simple but profound method with Grateful students.

Each session starts with simple warm-ups and breathing practices to get the body awake and attuned. Then a slow, mindful walk through a local forest or park, with lots of time to explore with all of the senses (well, maybe not taste). There is time for seated meditation, and finally a group sharing of insights.

This sample class will take place at Harbert-Payne park in Evanston, on the east side of the canal, between Dempster and Main. We will meet at the picnic table at the intersection of McDaniel and Nathaniel Place. See the exact spot by following this link:

The workshop will take place if it is raining, but not if there is lightning.  Please try to register at least one day beforehand, to ensure you will be notified of last-minute changes.

Adios Sal the chatbot

Well, we gave it a try, but it seems Sal the Chatbot was not the right fit for Grateful Yoga.  The functionality was too variable, and none of you seemed keen on using text messaging to reserve classes.  The service is a bit expensive, so we're letting it go starting May 23.  Thanks for participating in the experiment!  Maybe one day the AI will be good enough to try again.

Reserve in advance...or class might be canceled

With the aim of respecting our teachers' time as well as continue to be able to offer virtual streaming classes, we have a request:
  1. If you want to attend a hybrid class virtually, please sign up at least 1 hour in advance.  If no one is signed in for virtual attendance before class starts, we will not go to the additional trouble of setting up the laptop.
  2. If no one is signed up for any type of class 1 hour before it starts, we reserve the right to cancel the class or hold it exclusively on Zoom.  We want to respect the time it takes teachers to prepare for class. If you make a mistake and forget to sign up and the class turns out to be canceled, email us and we will send you a recording of a previous class.
  3. If you're signed up to receive a recording of a class but you're the only person registered, we won't require the teacher to teach a brand new class. Instead, we will email you and offer you a recording from a previous week

Nick's Newsletter

From Nick's latest reflections on the end of his sabbatical and return to teaching:

So after spending many years refining the content of my teaching, I am inspired to turn my focus to developing the ritual process of yoga classes. While still weaving in my various scientific and philosophical fascinations, I hope my classes can become more effective, impactful weekly rituals for those who wish to attend. In this vein, I am de-emphasizing the “study” aspect by changing my class names back to Hatha Basics (Saturdays at 12:15p) and Hatha Yoga and Meditation (Mondays at 10a). I am also making my classes 15 minutes shorter, so they don’t require such a big commitment.

(Never fear, yoga nerds: “Yoga Studies” will live on as workshops, book clubs and specialized series that take up particular topics.)
