Wednesday Monthly Meeting - May 2022
|
|
Our Annual General Meeting proved to be a fun-filled occasion attended by WINGS members and non members.
Superbly organised, all the important and legal requirements were covered
followed by thanks to the many members of last year’s committee without whom WINGS
could not function.
The hugely important contribution of our sponsors was gratefully acknowledged.
Jenny De Vetter & Mary Hobson were elected to the new committee.
Our long time committee member Paula Smith and Grant writer, Jackie Leech, stood down after several years but they would continue to be part of WINGS.
Our Asst Grant writer Jennifer Starr, who has been working together with Jackie Leech and helped us with our funding for several years also steep down from her role to take on a new role as a committee member.
Our Chair person Mina Crisp returned to England leaving WINGS in the capable hands of Dawn Spence.
Gwen Ras, Jennifer Starr and Julia Nuechter were awarded ‘Volunteers of the Year’ in recognition of their
outstanding contribution to the life of WINGS over the past years
The evening concluded with spot prizes, gifts, presentations and a delicious shared supper.

Ready, Steady, Cook - Indonesian style.
On a beautiful sunny Autumnal day, 9 ladies + a curious infant from WINGS were treated to a demonstration of Indonesian cooking by Avi, Eva and Tina. We learned from Avi how to make Cassava cake, Choco Soup by Tina and Chicken Nasi Goreng by Eva. She also made the famous Kerupuk which can be used to scoop up the rice, deep-fried noodles and 'birds nest' baskets. Tina whipped up Dabudabu, a delicious tangy onion, tomato and chilli accompaniment.
We were introduced to many new flavours, sauces, spices ...

WINGS visit to Jam Tse Dhargyey Ling, Tibetan Buddhist Centre
|
|
We have just returned home from a visit to Whangarei's hidden gem - The Jam Tse Dhargyey Ling Tibetan Buddhist Centre and what a wonderful experience it was.
We were met in the car park by Paul, the Co-Director of the Centre, who very kindly gave us a tour of the Centre and was very informative and welcoming.
Our first stop was at the painting studio where Nyima, a Tibetan monk who specialises in the Thangka (pronounced Tanka) painting and is also a teacher gave us a very warm welcome. He explained how he prepared the cotton canvas to it, treats it with chalk to make it as smooth as possible and then commences to paint the most intricate paintings. He makes his own paint from soil and stone and the colours are so vibrant. Nyima told us this type of painting can only be done in fine weather as moisture makes it very difficult to use but years later the paintings are still as colourful as when they were first painted. These paintings can take years to complete.
We then went into the Centre, where we met ...

It is always a delight to meet our WINGS members who have moved away from Whangarei. A lot of you might know Rosalind, who was with WINGS as a committee member, as a treasurer and as a very active volunteer at WINGS. She moved down to Taupo with her husband a few years ago. She is also the face behind starting our WINGS Taupo branch coffee morning every Friday.
She still comes to visit us up in Whangarei frequently
Our lovely Avi and Eva were in the Taupo area at the end of March so they took this opportunity to pay her a visit, a surprise visit. They spent some good quality time there, catching up and exploring the Taupo Botanical Garden.
So if you are in Taupo, do give her a call.
