Meal Train for Travis Bliss

Travis's husband, Jeremy, passed away recently, so we would like to reach out to him by helping with a few meals. Travis works Monday - Thursday until late in the evening, so he felt like a meal on Friday, Saturday and Sunday would be helpful and most appreciated. We will check with him after to see if he would need any more help. Let's reach out to Travis during this time of loss. Go Brentwood.

Friday Fun Night

The next Friday Fun Night will be Friday, Mary 27 from 5:30-7:30. This will be our Fort Night. Children will be invited to decorate cardboard partitions and make forts out of them. Please consider sending a clean, old sheet or light blanket to use for the forts. Pizza and dessert will be served. This is for pre-K through elementary ages.

Congregational Meeting -- Sunday, May 29 at 11:15am in Fellowship Hall

One of the main values that has been expressed by our board and congregation over the last several years is the desire to be a fully inclusive church, including truly being a welcoming space to our members, friends and neighbors with wheelchairs and walkers. To that end, the board voted unanimously on May 11th to enter Phase 2 of our renovation efforts. Phase 2 will include:
  • Remodeling our main restrooms to be fully ADA accessible and completely gender neutral. Instead of having two restrooms, we will create six or seven individually contained "Family" style restrooms
  • Fully accessible ADA entrance with automatic door opener
  • Landscaping
  • Versatile seating for all people including new furniture and updated decor in coffee/fellowship area near the sanctuary
With congregational approval, we will be able to move into Phase 2 and further live into our vision of being a truly welcoming, inclusive church. We encourage all members to attend as able.

New Sunday School for 3rd thru 5th Grades begins June 12

Beginning Sunday, June 12, Pastor Sarah will be leading a Summer class for 3rd-5th grades from 9-9:45am. We will begin by focusing on Bible basics such as how the Bible came to be, learning the books in the Bible, authorship, facts and myth, etc. It will be up to parents to decide if they want their children who are entering these grades (22/23 school year) to attend or whether they want their kids who are leaving these grades to attend.

Sanctuary Dedication -- June 5 during worship

Please be careful! Water only in the sanctuary.

Did You Know?

Brentwood's first worship service was held in the chapel at South Street Christian Church.  Soon afterward, the new congregation began meeting at the Kickapoo School on South Fremont.  The school is now known as Walt Disney School.  Membership grew from the original 29 to 86 members in the first year, and all are considered charter members of Brentwood.  Several area ministers worked with the new congregation until Neil Guy accepted the call to become Brentwood's first regular minister in March 1961.  When he arrived the membership was less than 100, but the membership had the highest per capita giving to World Outreach Missions among the Disciples Churches in Springfield.  ( More to Come )

Mark your calendars for summer VBS!

Our Trinity friends have invited us to their joint VBS with Westminster Presbyterian. Pastor Sarah will be helping during this week and she would love to see as many of our kids and family and friends as possible. The event is free.

Brentwood participants can reserve a spot by contacting Pastor Sarah.

Gardenpalooza!

Our garden at Brentwood Christian Church is part of the Springfield Community Gardens, which is holding Gardenpalooza at Mother's Brewing Co on June 4 from 3-8 p.m.

Run for Fun!

The seventh season of Run for Fun, a summer fitness-and-health program for children 6 through 11, starts Saturday, June 4.

The free program was created by Steve Pokin, of Brentwood, in 2016 after he heard Greg Burris, then Springfield city manager, speak at Brentwood about the Zone 1 Blitz, a public/private effort to improve life for residents of northwest Springfield.

Run for Fun meets 10 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. every Saturday in June and July at Hailey Owens Playground, at Westport Elementary, 415 S Golden Ave, Springfield. Children can attend one session or all nine; it doesn’t matter.

Steve is a long-time runner and once coached a boys high school track team. He makes running and fitness fun with activities like the obstacle course, the tug-of-war over a small pool, running bases and the Cake Relay. The emphasis is on exercise, not competition.

There’s also a brief weekly lesson on topics such as the importance of hydration during exercise and, for example, getting enough sleep.

The Park Board provides weekly snacks and drinks; it also requires that all volunteers first clear a background check.

To register, call Steve at 417-291-9565 or simply attend a session at Hailey Owens Playground and fill out a form then.

Baptism Class Now Forming

All youth ages 12 and up are invited to a baptism class led by Rev. Phil in preparation for baptisms in the updated sanctuary on Pentecost Sunday, June 5.

Candidates should plan to attend at least two of the sessions that will be held on the Sundays of May 22 & 29 from 5-6PM and the Wednesdays of May 25 & June 1 from 6-7PM. (Classes are offered on Sundays and Wednesdays in order to accommodate as many schedules as possible.)

Those who attend the class and wish to be baptized can do so on June 5th during our 10AM worship service. If you aren't sure if you want to be baptized, you can still attend the class and make the decision that you feel is best for you at this stage in your life.

Brentwood 101

If you would like an in-depth introduction to Brentwood, Rev. Snider regularly teaches a series of classes called Brentwood 101, in which participants are introduced to Brentwood’s history, ministries, programs, and approach to Christianity.

The next Brentwood 101 series meets on the Sundays of May 22nd and 29th from 6:30-7:30PM in Room 10. (Room 10 is located near the sanctuary, just past the double doors. Use this map.)

Rev. Snider and Rev. Bowen-Marler are also available for coffee and conversation for those who’d like to learn more about Brentwood and/or are interested in becoming a member. Feel free to set up a time to meet with either of them (contactphilsnider@gmail.com or rev.emily.bowen@gmail.com).
