issue #104

Here in DC, we had our *one day* of beautiful spring weather and now BAM we are in the thick of the muggy summer. Which, has its perks because it means BBQ season is back! So today I thought I'd round up my favorite BBQ go-to wines, for any inspo you might need to bring with you to one soon (or heck, just inspo to throw one!), especially with Memorial Day Weekend coming up.

This week's wine: summer bbq picks

When you're picking wines for a summer bbq, you want wines that can hold up to the variety of foods we generally serve-- from burgers to ribs to creamy mac and cheese and potato salad-- but, at the same time, you probably don't want ones that will overpower the food and steal the show! So I go for acidic whites with zip and juicier reds. You want these wines to shine on their own but also with food.

Here are my three recommendations for you:

Picpoul Blanc
When I think about this wine, I can almost already feel my mouth tingling. Limeade is one of my favorite tasting notes from this gem (and what feels more bbq-appropriate than that?) If you missed the issue where I covered this wine, head here, and you must look for the boxed version with the little frog! An instant bbq conversation starter and fun place to begin for anyone who has yet to try boxed wine.

Italian rosΓ© blends
I had a really stellar Barbera rosΓ© blend on Friday that really convinced me to trend in this direction this summer. Acid is *chef's kiss* for any stellar wine and food pairing. Italian wines, as a general rule of thumb, generally trend towards high-acid. So that makes these rosΓ© blends just fantastic for any and all bbq food pairing you want to try out!

Argentinian Malbec
Need a red wine to serve as well? I always go with Malbec. Yes, they are big wines-- but Argentinian Malbec is very fruit-forward and juicy so it helps keep the tannins in check. So it makes it great to pair with burgers, steak, and mushrooms, but again (and importantly!) just lovely as well on it's own, even on a warm summer evening.
