Three Different Composers, One Common Link

This album includes three works for piano and orchestra from the middle years of the twentieth century. Though stylistically very different, all three have American connections.

Ravel’s Concerto in G Major (1932) was his most successful attempt to integrate elements of American jazz into his own musical language; Schoenberg’s Piano Concerto (1942) was composed in Los Angeles, where Schoenberg was exiled after fleeing Europe; and Messiaen’s Oiseaux exotiques (1956) took as its main source of inspiration a series of gramophone records of American birdsong.

A Heartrending And Provocative Tragedy

The Dresdener Philharmonie, Sächsischer Staatsopernchor Dresden and conductor Daniel Oren present Verdi’s masterpiece La Traviata, together with a stellar cast including René Barbera as Alfredo, Lester Lynch as Germont, and world star soprano Lisette Oropesa as Violetta. Verdi’s opera from 1853 was revolutionary in the sense that it presented a subject of its own time, rather than the usual historically remote stories. Interestingly enough, this tragic story of a woman sacrificing her love to save the honour of her beloved’s family still feels as fresh and topical as ever before, explaining its unrelenting popularity.

Overshadowed Works Brought to the Spotlight

In this wonderful recording, cellist Lorenzo Meseguer and pianist Mario Mora bring together four composers who have historically been undervalued.

We have Fanny Mendelssohn, who was overshadowed by her younger brother Felix. He in turn, despite being a very significant composer, was also denigrated by some European musicologists in the early 20th century, in part because of his Jewish origins. Then there’s Clara Schumann, whose fame was eclipsed by that of her husband Robert. Our final composer is Gustav Jenner, who was Brahms’s only composition pupil, towards the end of the latter’s life. - Lorenzo Maseguer

New DSD Release

A Tribute to the Goddess of the Night Sky

In August 2020 the adventurous cellist Maya Fridman met pianist and conductor Maarten van Veen, with whom she felt an immediate musical click. Something magical happened between Fridman and Van Veen and both felt simultaneously that something unique was developing between them. They had deep conversations and came up with the extraordinary idea of recording a completely improvised recital with ‘Nuit’, the Ancient Egyptian goddess of the universe, as the central theme.

Inspired by the Egyptian myth, we also feel the need of sharing musical moments being aware that we are all part of the universe and somehow connected. We hope that inner wish can make a change in the world, just like Maya and I connected through the improvisations that we now share. - Maarten van Veen

Two Memorable Composers 50 Years Apart

Celebrating Franck and Scriabin! is pianist Naum Grubert’s third DSD release at NativeDSD.Com on the Navis Classics label.

When I first thought of recording on the same album Franck’s Prelude, Chorale and Fugue and selected early works by Scriabin, I had no inkling that the two composers were born exactly fifty years apart, and when the album was released in 2022 the world would be celebrating the bicentenary of Franck’s birth and 150th anniversary of Scriabin’s. I simply thought that, despite their largely incompatible creative objectives, their music belonged together. That a mysterious link existed between these two composers on some level, a link that would make them comfortable sharing the same album. – Naum Grubert (piano)
