Everything Kāpiti

Ngā Pitopito kōrero mai i te Kaunihera o Kāpiti

Kia ora Kāpiti

With more wild weather last week, this week we're looking at what emergency management can look like in Kāpiti; make sure you read up to see what plans you should be making for emergencies.

We're also highlighting lots of fantastic events and exhibitions, so get out and enjoy the best of what's on! Remember to keep masking and being kind when you're out and about, too, so we can all protect the vulnerable in our community.

Mā te wā – have a great week.

Celebrate our local heroes – last week for nominations!

Nominations for our Civic and Community Awards close next Tuesday. This is your chance to acknowledge the services, activities or actions of those who work tirelessly, often in the background, to benefit our community.

The Kāpiti Coast Civic Awards are Council’s highest honour for both individuals and groups who’ve shown exemplary service and/or leadership to keep our communities connected and strong.

The Wellington Airport Regional Community Awards celebrate community group volunteers who through their work have helped make Kāpiti a great place to live.

Anyone can nominate a deserving individual or group for the Kāpiti Coast Civic Awards, or put a group forward for the Wellington Airport Regional Community Awards. Information about how to make a nomination is on our website.

Being green in Kāpiti schools

We’ve partnered with Enviroschools to teach over 1000 year five and six tamariki (children) about Kāpiti’s biodiversity, connecting them to their environment.
They’ve used recycled materials to make bird feeders and biodomes (mini-ecosystem gardens) to grow foraged native tree seeds to eventually plant in their school gardens. It's been rewarding seeing the kids recognise they can make a real difference.

Thank you to Compost NZ for generously donating compost, and Enviroschools’ Amanda Dobson for supporting our staff with this inspiring project.

Diversity in action

Tomorrow Erika and Coco Flash, two fabulous drag queens, are visiting our libraries in Ōtaki and Paraparaumu as part of our storytime series.
The Living Library programme is an international project addressing prejudice by helping people talk to those they wouldn’t normally meet. Rainbow Storytimes are part of the Living Library programme, and are a chance for participants to hear about acceptance, diversity, inclusion, kindness, and becoming more confident in yourself.

Join us for interactive games and stories about acceptance, inclusion and confidence.

Deep dive into our water | Drinking water

Deep diving into our water supply

Next in our deep dive into Kapiti’s three waters, we take a long, cool drink of our water supply.

We manage and maintain our community’s water treatment plants, reservoirs, pump stations and reticulation network (how water gets to your house). All our public drinking water is tested and treated with chlorine and high-intensity UV light and pH corrected to make sure it’s safe to drink, before being supplied to approximately 20,000 connections for household and commercial use.

There’s lots more to this process – check out our website for more!

We're submitting on the national climate change adaptation plan

We’ve put together a submission on the national approach to sea-level rise for Council to consider at its Thursday 26 May meeting.
The Ministry for the Environment is consulting on a draft national climate change adaptation plan, and proposed legislation for ‘managed retreat’. This is the careful and planned relocation of people, places and sites of significance away from areas at high risk from the impacts of climate change.

You can read our draft submission in the next Council meeting agenda, and watch the meeting online, through our website.

Looking out for you in emergencies

Remember December’s floods? It feels like a long time since we received a month's average rainfall in just a couple of days, with homes flooded and communities cut off.
But with last week’s wild weather wreaking havoc in Horowhenua, and winter just around the corner, it's time to make sure you’re prepared for the impact of more extreme weather.

While our local Emergency Operations Centre was activated to help manage the response in December, in an emergency your first point for help is you and your community.

Getting prepared isn’t difficult, but you do need to give it some thought ahead of time, and make good plans.

There are some great resources available at our website – check it out now!

Bridging the gap at Tikotu Stream

Our contractors will be constructing the piles for the new pedestrian bridge at Tikotu Stream, Maclean Park, in late May.

The fully accessible bridge is being constructed off site, and will eventually include whakairo (carved) art elements. The bridge is designed to connect directly to the decks that will surround the Te Uruhi building pods.

Temporary ramps will ensure the bridge is accessible until the deck and buildings are built. We’ll confirm the installation date for the bridge soon.
