Greetings UVCB,
My most important note here is to call your attention to the spreadsheet built by Marilyn Hill on which we record our intention to participate in a growing schedule of summer performances. Please see her note below, check out the spreadsheet, and sign up to join us starting with our first performance date on May 29th in Norwich starting at noon. We will be participating in the Memorial Day observances of the Lyman F. Pell Post 8 (VFW).
On a sad note, I add news that Elisa Rice passed away this week at Valley Terrace where she had been living with Clayton. Cindy Boehm-Patenaude writes in an email that Elisa is considered the last of the “founding mothers” of the UVCB. I have spoken with Clayton’s daughter today and I am informed that Clayton does not intend to return to the Band – another sad loss.
[Carol Maxfield, Elisa and Clayton’s daughter, has requested UVCB members with knowledge of Elisa’s history with the band contact her with info to assist her in writing
her obituary. Please call or text her in Arizona at 480-213-3400, or email at cjmaxfield@cox.net Ed.]

Greetings, UVCB,
Here is updated information on the location of pdf files of all of our parade and summer-concert music.
1. As I mentioned last week, Jane Sachs has made 8½ x 11 enlargements of all parade booklets, and scanned these to create pdf copies. (Many thanks, Jane!). All of these copies are stored in this Parade Music folder on the band’s Google Drive site.
2. I have scanned and uploaded pdf copies of all of our summer-concert music to this Summer 2022 repertoirefolder on our Google Drive site.
3. Jane and I are in the process of creating new bound enlarged booklets. They’re not ready yet; stay tuned.
At tomorrow evening’s rehearsal, we will work on music that we’re likely to play at the Norwich Memorial Day event on May 29. This will include numerous tunes from the parade books.
Finally--
Last week, I mentioned the extraordinary radio monologue that Jean Shepherd delivered shortly after returning from the March on Washington in August 1963. Here is a link to that monologue. It begins with the “Clear Track Polka” (with which he began every show); it ends with Sam Cooke’s great “A Change is Gonna Come.”
Warm regards,
Mark Nelson

Band Uniforms
UVCB’s summer performance uniform for the past several seasons has been navy blue short sleeve polo shirts with UVCB logo, and khaki pants/skirt/shorts. We’ll be thus attired for next Sunday’s Memorial Day concert in Norwich. For those who’ve recently ordered shirts, we have some of them now and we’ll have them available at tomorrow’s rehearsal; the cost is $26 each. Some of the shirts are on back order; we’ve been told by our supplier that it may be a few weeks before we have them all. With that in mind, please try to locate something similar in color to wear in case your new shirt isn’t here in time.
Liz Fitzgerald has volunteered to be our ‘Uniform Czarina’. She’s been doing most of the leg work recently, and has even managed to upgrade the sweatshirts on order from the unisex model to a much nicer zipper-neck style in gender-specific sizes.

UVCB Covid Policies
CDC currently grades risk of Covid transmission in our surrounding counties as “High.”
Proof of vaccination against Covid (i.e., basic series plus booster unless unable to do so by virtue of timing) continues to be required to participate in any in-person UVCB event. Members may demonstrate proof by emailing a copy of the CDC card to mark.nunlist@dartmouth.edu or texting that image to him at 603-448-7901. At the Board’s direction, Mark Nunlist continues to maintain a confidential record of members’ vaccination status.
There will be occasions when a UVCB member tests Covid-positive. When this occurs or the Band member believes he or she has been exposed to a Covid-positive individual elsewhere, we ask that the individual notify Mark Nelson and Mark Nunlist. We can then inform other Band members who might have been exposed themselves by virtue of proximity, enabling them to test / monitor themselves.
A member who tests Covid-positive is welcome to return to in-person UVCB events following completion of the recommended five-day isolation period plus a further five days of mask-wearing around other people and has obtained a negative Covid antigen test (e.g., an “at-home” Covid test). Band members occasionally announce that they plan to miss an upcoming rehearsal because they don’t feel well. We applaud that concern for one another. Please excuse yourself if you have any symptoms of illness, regardless of any test result, and seek medical care and / or covid testing as appropriate.
Of course, the individual’s own healthcare is of paramount importance, and we encourage members to seek - and be guided by - appropriate medical advice.
Thank you all and stay well,
Mark Nunlist
