We are Family – Call to Action on Article 41.3 of the Constitution

One Family believes in an Ireland where every family is cherished equally, and enjoys the social, financial and legal equality to create their own positive future. On UN International Day of Families, Sunday May 15, we called for change to Article 41.3 of the Constitution on the definition of the family. We are asking you to sign-up and join us in a Constitutional Referendum campaign.

A Child Maintenance Service

On 27 April, One Family and SPARK presented the case for a statutory Child Maintenance Agency at Leinster House with Sinn Féin TD Claire Kerrane. Child Maintenance is a vital issue for many of the families we represent and it was great to see this issue being taken up by TDs. We are awaiting the publication of the recommendation of the Child Maintenance Review Group chaired by Justice Murphy which is due to be published shortly. Our Policy Submissions:

We made a submission to the Joint Oireachtas Committee on Children, Equality, Disability, Integration and Youth on a draft Bill on Work-Life Balance.

In it, we recommended that medical leave be paid, employees have access to flexible working from their first day of employment and that children in one-parent families have equitable access to paid parental leave schemes as children in two-parent families. You can read our submission here.

Latest Poverty Data Shows a Fall in Poverty but a Rise in Deprivation

The latest figures published by the Central Statistics Office on poverty and deprivation show a welcome fall in the number of one-parent families who are living in consistent poverty and the number who are at risk of poverty. Yet still 1 in every 7 one-parent families are living in poverty and almost 1 in 4 are at risk of poverty – unacceptably high figures particularly when compared which much lower rates in two-parent households and the general population.

The fall in poverty is largely due to the positive effect the Pandemic Unemployment Payment and the Wage Subsidy Schemes had on household income. Unfortunately, these supports have now ended but their impact shows the positive effect an adequate income can have on reducing poverty.

Deprivation in one-parent families remains shockingly high, with almost half experiencing deprivation and 2 in 5 saying they struggle to make ends meet. This demonstrates the damage the cost-of living crisis is having on one-parent families.
