Hi from Susie

It’s been a busy month contending with sudden staff and studio diary changes...again!
We are lucky, however, to continue to be a Covid safe space for our patients and staff.
I am a bit late with 'Mother's day' best wishes! But thank you to all the wonderful mums of all ages who come to see us.  I hope you like the picture of the Pilates ' stomach massage ' exercise on the reformer with swiss ball support. One of my favorite reformer exercises.

We thank those of you who have chosen to wear masks in the studio for Pilates and Physio appointments,  although we respect everyone has the freedom to make their own choices in this regard. Our admin staff, Physios and instructors continue to wear masks at work as we feel this is an important part of helping us stay safe from air born infection.

I'm sure you've heard about staff shortages across many industries and now we are experiencing this too. We will have to ask some clients to be flexible with exercise session times, to assist us again.

We sincerely apologise for any inconveniences.
Susie

STAFF NEWS
Seamus Baker
We are wishing Seamus Baker well for an exciting new phase in his life. He and his wife (and dog Oscar) are moving to Tassie in June. This means there will be no Wednesday afternoon Pilates or Physio sessions on offer for the foreseeable future.
Susie and Sammy will miss Seamus and Roselin too, as they have provided great Sammy minding assistance at times. Thank you Seamus and Roselin!

Michelle Duggan
One of our much loved instructors Michelle will be away on extended leave. We wish her well and hope to see her back at the studio when she is able.

Lee Buckley and Victoria Tow
Lee is travelling overseas with her husband for 3 month on a much deserved Italian odyssey!
Therefore, we are excited to welcome back Victoria Tow to assist Fiona with admin. We're also very happy to welcome Victoria back to the Pilates studio on Thursday evenings with Caitlin.

Susie, Jenna, Julia, Kim, Lisa, Augusto, Kate and Phoebe
are here for the usual physiotherapy, exercise rehab and Pilates times, with more morning slots available now.

We will also welcome some excellent visiting Pilates instructors to assist with covers ,
so please make them feel welcome.

Please welcome experienced Pilates instructor, Moira Callahan to Thursday mornings!

Our practitioners focus on providing up-to-date research-proven methods and in a recent randomised, controlled study the following has been shown:

1) Adding upper cervical spine manual therapy to cervical training significantly improves headaches in these patients.

2) Restoring upper cervical joint function with manual therapy facilitates and improves the results of cervical training.

This means that a combination of physio manual therapy techniques and specific exercise rehabilitation is a effective in managing cervical headaches and neck pain. We can offer both, so please let your physio or Pilates instructor know if you need any advice or treatment.

One of our favourite deep neck muscle exercises is the ' yes' nod exercise with the head resting on a half full soft ball. As you lie your head on the ball or a pillow:
- Can you breath and relax tight , over active outer neck muscles and jaw muscles?
- Can you do a slight ' skull on upper neck bone' ' yes' nod movement without tension in those superficial neck muscles?
- Can you hold the chin to neck ' yes nod' for a few seconds to increase endurance in the deep muscles, and prevent the ' POKE NECK' posture!
Get your instructor to check how you do this exercise, and also ask for an appointment for  ' hands on' manual physiotherapy assessment and treatment of cervical/ neck joint mobility and glide.

Susie Writes: I met Nicola when she ran a ballet studio in Annandale and then Leichhardt. Many dance students who grew up in the area know her too! Nicola has always been very aware and skilled with taking students through a safe but thorough, uplifting experience of dance, in both ballet and lyrical contemporary styles. I am excited she has offered to run these classes at the studio. Please book with her and let your friends know.

Nicola writes: I taught my first ballet class at age 14, and after a contemporary and classical dance career I have used my gifts in communicating, to teach students how to both avoid injury and captivate an audience. Running my own dance studio 2009-2019 was the culmination of this journey thus far.
As a ballet teacher I know that I can quickly and effectively improve a student’s placement and technique to bring about rapid improvement (with a notable lack of injury). It’s very fulfilling to actively show people what they are uniquely good at and see them blossom in confidence!

Kind Regards
Nicola Rose
