THANK YOU FOLAR VOLUNTEERS!

FOLAR’s mission is to conserve and protect the lower Appomattox River for ALL to enjoy, and we do that with the power of volunteers.

Thank you to the 20 Trail Count Volunteers last week and the 77 Clean-up Volunteers who rocked the April 30th clean-up. FOLAR volunteers and board members cleaned up 5 public access points along the river with groups from Perdue Farms, Gerdau Steel Mill, and Fort Lee. Together, we removed or recycled…115 bags of trash, 28 tires, 2 buckets of plastic bottles to recycle, 1 office chair, 1 gallon of motor oil, and 1 air mattress! Special thanks to Meridian Waste and Virginia American Water for their support, to Trapezium Brewing Company who hosted a “first drink on us!” volunteer meet-up afterwards, and thanks to Sidd Kumar for coming out to take photos!

FOLAR’s riverfront conservation work is getting a big boost from the Virginia Environmental Endowment, whose support helped us to create a NEW Land Conservation Analysis Tool. As we build and connect the Appomattox River Trail, we are working with landowners interested in conservation easements and donations to support the trail’s development and the protection of the river. The Appomattox River Trail is truly a path to conservation for the Tri-Cities region.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED

The Appomattox is part of the Chesapeake Bay Watershed, and we’re partnering with Chesapeake Bay Foundation on this clean-up from 9am-12pm on June 4th in Hopewell. Join us!

NEW VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITY

Help us free trees, protect our native plants and local wildlife, and restore riparian buffers! Join us Thursday evenings 5-7pm, every other week, to remove invasive plants like wisteria at University Blvd Trailhead in Petersburg.

Paddle-OR-Battle to Preserve the Appomattox River

Welcoming paddlers of ALL levels to the 14th PADDLE BATTLE on the scenic Appomattox River! This year’s event starts at the Hopewell Marina and ends at Petersburg’s Pocahontas Island. NEW RACING CATEGORIES for boats above/below 16 feet - plus an unlimited category competing for the fastest overall trophy! Kayak rentals available.

The native plant gardens are in bloom at University Blvd Trailhead, and we’re excited to see these monarch caterpillars munching on milkweed. Native plants feed native wildlife, restoring local ecosystems and improving riverfront wildlife habitats.
