Verdugo, Gomez win Hearst top 10s
Two students from the UA School of Journalism placed among the top writing winners in the 2021-2022 Hearst Journalism Awards Program. Elvia Verdugo (left), a fall 2021 graduate, captured third in personality/profile writing among 114 entries nationally. Gloria Gomez, who graduated May 13, placed ninth in investigative reporting among 67 entries.

Just Desserts honors top students
Gloria Gomez, Diana Ramos, Ella McCarville, Julia Blumberg and Mandy Loader won top honors at the 56th annual Just Desserts student awards celebration on May 5. The event was held in-person at the Arizona Historical Society, and some of the graduates gathered in front of Marshall for a photo afterward.

Enriquez wins Gyorke photo award
Teressa Enriquez won the spring 2022 Drew Gyorke Memorial Photojournalism Award for her image of a local restaurant, Culinary Dropout. The contest featured 12 student finalists from Professor Kim Newton’s JOUR 203 photography class.

Howlett wins Finley writing contest
Erika Howlett took first place in the spring 2022 Mark Finley Gold Pen Award for Best Beginning News Writer Contest on April 28. Twelve finalists from Fred Brock’s two JOUR 205 classes interviewed Tucson Police Capt. John Leavitt (above) about the wave of fentanyl use, then wrote a story on deadline.

Professors' book honored by AEJMC
Professors Celeste González de Bustamante and
Jeannine Relly won the Frank Luther Mott / Kappa Tau Alpha Research Award for their book, "Surviving Mexico: Resistance and Resilience among Journalists in the Twenty-First Century." They'll be honored in August by the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication (AEJMC) in Detroit. González de Bustamante is leaving the J-school for UT-Austin.

Students produce Cat's Eye show
Students in Prof. Liliana Soto's Arizona Cat's Eye class produced their end-of-the-semester newscast. Ramos soars as journalist, athlete
Outreach assistant Rachel Mosteller profiled Venezuelan senior Diana Ramos (above) in The Cursor magazine. Ramos, a high jumper for the UA track and field team, won the school's Outstanding Junior award in 2021 and Outstanding Senior award in 2022, and published several stories as an Arizona Daily Star apprentice reporter.
