 Dr. Retis named director

Professor Jessica Retis, a globally recognized scholar in Latinx media and bilingual journalism, has been appointed director of the University of Arizona School of Journalism, the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences announced May 19. Retis, director of the school’s Bilingual Journalism master’s program, will take over duties from Michael McKisson, interim director, on July 1. Retis, who was born in Peru, is the first professor of color to be named director in the school’s 72-year history.“In a few years, we will be celebrating our 75th anniversary, and I believe we have an excellent opportunity to work on achieving this milestone with a solid and integrated school,” Retis said.

Verdugo, Gomez win Hearst top 10s

Two students from the UA School of Journalism placed among the top writing winners in the 2021-2022 Hearst Journalism Awards Program. Elvia Verdugo (left), a fall 2021 graduate, captured third in personality/profile writing among 114 entries nationally. Gloria Gomez, who graduated May 13, placed ninth in investigative reporting among 67 entries.

Just Desserts honors top students

Gloria GomezDiana RamosElla McCarvilleJulia Blumberg and Mandy Loader won top honors at the 56th annual Just Desserts student awards celebration on May 5. The event was held in-person at the Arizona Historical Society, and some of the graduates gathered in front of Marshall for a photo afterward.

Enriquez wins Gyorke photo award

Teressa Enriquez won the spring 2022 Drew Gyorke Memorial Photojournalism Award for her image of a local restaurant, Culinary Dropout. The contest featured 12 student finalists from Professor Kim Newton’s JOUR 203 photography class.

Howlett wins Finley writing contest

Erika Howlett took first place in the spring 2022 Mark Finley Gold Pen Award for Best Beginning News Writer Contest on April 28. Twelve finalists from Fred Brock’s two JOUR 205 classes interviewed Tucson Police Capt. John Leavitt (above) about the wave of fentanyl use, then wrote a story on deadline.

Professors' book honored by AEJMC

Professors Celeste González de Bustamante and
Jeannine Relly won the Frank Luther Mott / Kappa Tau Alpha Research Award for their book, "Surviving Mexico: Resistance and Resilience among Journalists in the Twenty-First Century." They'll be honored in August by the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication (AEJMC) in Detroit. González de Bustamante is leaving the J-school for UT-Austin.

Students produce Cat's Eye show

Students in Prof. Liliana Soto's Arizona Cat's Eye class produced their end-of-the-semester newscast. Students contributing were Elise Adan, Asher Bookspan, Cristina Felix, Autumn Froitland, Sam Gilman, Ashley Hammet, Brendan Jacques, Jinqui Lu, Alison Moffitt, Arianna Reyna, Jeffrey Roberts, Delaina Stenchever and Matt Tiahrt.

Ramos soars as journalist, athlete

Outreach assistant Rachel Mosteller profiled Venezuelan senior Diana Ramos (above) in The Cursor magazine. Ramos, a high jumper for the UA track and field team, won the school's Outstanding Junior award in 2021 and Outstanding Senior award in 2022, and published several stories as an Arizona Daily Star apprentice reporter.

Susan E. Swanberg was promoted to associate professor with tenure on April 29. 

Shannon Conner, an adjunct instructor, won the student-nominated Hugh and Jan Harelson Excellence in Teaching Award for the second time.

Jennifer Bates joined the J-school on April 25 as an administrative associate. She holds a B.A. in History from the University of Arizona and an M.A. in History from UNC Charlotte. 

Carol Schwalbe organized a May 14 memorial for her husband, Cecil Schwalbe, at the ENR2 building on campus. See some of the tribute videos produced by alum John de Dios.

Mike Chesnick ('84), career strategies and outreach coordinator, won the Carol and Cecil Schwalbe Staff Award for Outstanding Service.

Pascal Albright is a digital producer for the Arizona Daily Star.

Mariana Dale ('14) shared a regional Edward R. Murrow Award for Excellence in Innovation as part of the Southern California NPR affiliate's "Child Care, Unfiltered" project. Dale covers early childhood education for KPCC/LAist.

Rahsaan Gethers ('08) is now vice president of basketball communications for the Portland Trail Blazers after handling media relations for the Sacramento Kings for eight years.

Clara Migoya ('21 M.A.) won first place in the 2021 Society of Professional Journalists Region 11 Mark of Excellence Awards for general news reporting for her Arizona Daily Star story, "Mine spill of 2014 continues to devastate Sonoran communities years later."

Josh Morgan ('12) is now a staff photographer and videographer for USA Today after five years at the Greenville (S.C.) News.

Ireland Stevenson ('20) secured a Presidential Management Fellowship with the Dept. of Agriculture. She is graduating with a Master of Public Administration.

Madison Beal defended her master's project, "Talking Trash: Stories of Pollution on the Santa Cruz River" on May 6.

Julia Blumberg, the school's first Bilingual Journalism master's grad, defended her project, “Ecologies of Care: How Cross Border Humanitarian Organizations Support Asylum Seekers,” on April 21. Story

defended her master's project, “Avian Enthusiasts: An exploration of birdwatching in Tucson,” on May 3.

Kate Ewing published a May 23 story, "UA's emergency blue-light phones stay on, but go out elsewhere," in the Arizona Daily Star.

Jane Florance published a front-page story in The Arizona Republic on Easter, "Nearly 3 years after fire destroyed church, Phoenix congregation celebrates first Easter Mass."

Sebastian Janik defended his master's project, "The Final Skate," on May 4. 

Kat Kennedy, a Ph.D. minor, was named a Society of Professional Journalists Region 11 Mark of Excellence finalist in feature writing for her Medium story, "The $2 drug that millions of patients aren't being told about." 

Jelena Lukic, who earned an M.A. in Studies of Global Media, published a May 3 audio story for the Daily Wildcat, "Building bridges: Eight years into Yemen conflict"

Taylor Maresca secured a post-graduation job WBTW News 13 in Myrtle Beach, SC as a multimedia journalist.

Katya Mendoza defended her master's project, "La Milenaria: Developing a Book Proposal" on May 6.

Wenei Philimon defended her master's project, “'Till Shiloh Comes: A podcast about the Jesus People, Their Music and the Movement,” on May 2.
