New Study to Improve Gastric Cancer Diagnosis in Victoria

 newly-funded project led by our Cancer Research Program is set to determine whether patients with advanced gastric (stomach) cancer in Victoria are all being tested for HER2 status using the recommended criteria at the time of their diagnosis. This may result in more patients being diagnosed with HER2-positive tumours, and hence more patients being eligible for treatment with targeted drug therapy, offering potentially better outcomes.

Helping Raise Vital Awareness

When Nadine Udorovic’s father, John was diagnosed with brain cancer in 2005, it came completely out of the blue. The previously fit and healthy lawyer had a seizure at work and just days later was diagnosed with central nervous system (CNS) lymphoma, a rare type of brain cancer.

We will contact people directly, undertake a thorough needs assessment and refer them to relevant support from our directory of more than 470 community services. Cancer, COVID-19 & You Survey

Cancer is hard. COVID-19 made it even harder.  The pandemic forced many changes in healthcare that affected cancer care – some changes were for the better, others weren’t.

Cancer Council Victoria, in partnership with The Daffodil Centre, is undertaking research to understand the impact of COVID-19 on people affected by cancer. This includes the emotional impact, treatment changes, the cost of cancer and hospital visitor restrictions.

Grants-in-Aid Funding

Grants-in-Aid funds high-quality research into the causes, prevention, detection, diagnosis and supportive care or treatment of cancer, with a focus on all cancer types to support our vision for a cancer-free future.

Applications for the 2022 round of Grants-in-Aid funding open in late May. Up to 12 grants are available with a maximum of $300,000 available per grant.

Researcher Exchange & Development within Industry (REDI) Fellowship

Applications close Wednesday 27 July 2022
The REDI Fellowship Program is intended to accelerate relationships, drive projects towards commercial outcomes and provide industry relevant skills to the Fellow.
Duration (3 options available):

  • 12 months full time
  • 6 months – 12 months full time
  • 6 months -12 months where the Fellow spends 50% of time working with the Sponsor

Fellowships can start anytime from 15 November 2022 and must be completed by December 2023.

Funding: up to a total of AUD$250,000 per Fellow, per annum

Targeting Natural Killer cells in cancer immunotherapy

Presented by Professor Nicholas Huntington, NHMRC Leadership Fellow & Head Cancer Immunotherapy Laboratory, Monash Biomedicine Discovery Institute

Prof Huntington will present recent clinical evidence that natural killer (NK) cells are a key in the protective anti-tumour immune response and discuss new opportunities to target NK cell function to enhance cancer immunotherapy response rates across a more diverse range of cancers.

Monash Biomedical Imaging Webinar: Growing a World-Class Precision Medicine Industry

Professor Gary Egan and Dr Maggie Aulsebrook will explain how the Australian Precision Medicine Enterprise (APME) will secure Australia’s supply of critical radiopharmaceuticals, build a globally competitive Australian manufacturing hub, and train scientists and engineers for the Australian workforce. They will cover the APME’s state-of-the-art 30 MeV and 18-24 MeV cyclotrons and radiochemistry facilities, as well as the services that will be accessible to students, scientists, clinical researchers, and pharmaceutical companies in Australia and around the world. The APME is a collaboration between Monash University, Global Medical Solutions Australia, and Telix Pharmaceuticals.
