May is almost over which means we're not far off halfway through 2022 already.
Wondering where that time went? Yes, us too!

The month of May is special for many reasons. Firstly, it's one of the only months in the year that you can spot peonies in bloom. (Did you know as well as being beautiful to look at, peonies are also used for various medicinal purposes?)

It's also the month of #NoMowMay, Plantlife’s annual campaign to encourage people to leave the lawnmowers in the shed and let your garden bloom. While this year's #NoMowMay is almost over, it serves as a great reminder that plants and pollinators need one another and we can make a small but positive impact from the comfort of our own homes.
In other news, here are a few updates from JFA:
JFA is Always Up to Date

We have been regularly updating clients about biodiversity net gain, soon to be a national requirement.  But we also stay ahead on other technical issues. In 2022 we changed our bat survey equipment to utilise IR night vision cameras.  This will now become the standard approach with new guidelines expected this summer.  We are also generally reducing the number of surveys required, largely eliminating dawn surveys except in unusual circumstances.  These changes will result in quicker surveys and should reduce time spent and costs for clients.
Recent BNG Success

We recently demonstrated a 35% uplift in biodiversity on a site in Battersea, South London,  as part of a planning submission for student housing.  This goes well beyond the minimum requirement for net gain – generally around 10%.  The result demonstrates that net gain can be achieved on brownfield sites with regeneration and new build.
Ecology Field Season

The field season for ecology is active now.  For any site under consideration for development, this should be considered now.  Failure to have ecology baseline data can significantly delay a planning submission.  If you are uncertain as to whether to proceed with surveys, do get in touch and we will be happy to discuss.
