Child Maintenance Stories
“Today, I have €1.13 cent to my name and an empty fridge. I have a child to feed, cloth and house until payday on Thursday. I am a 38 year old, single, full-time working mother to a 9 year old little girl. My child and I are effectively homeless and were taken in by family.

My little girl’s Dad owes court-ordered back maintenance somewhere in the region of €10k and it is growing weekly. But nobody in Ireland is ever going to force him to pay, penalise him or help me explain to my child why I cannot buy her a jelly snake in the local shop for 30 cents, never mind pay a solicitor to return to court to follow up on the missed payments.

Ireland is years behind the rest of Europe on Child Maintenance. We need an independent child maintenance agency to take this issue out of the courts and reduce parental conflict.

To keep pressure on Government and keep child maintenance on the agenda, we are looking for parents to tell their stories on child maintenance. Stories will be used to build anonymous stories to show the issues parents are facing.

E-Learning Courses for Parents

One Family offers five e-learning courses, which are courses you take in your own time, in the comfort of your own home. These courses have specific content for those parenting alone or sharing parenting, but in general the programme supports all family forms.

The Department of Justice is holding an open consultation on parental alienation. We'd engage parents and all those interested in the area to take part. The deadline for submissions is 24 June 2022. You can access more information and make a submission here.
The Back to School Clothing and Footwear Allowance (BTSCFA) which helps parent meet the cost of uniforms and footwear for children going to school is open from 20 June 2022 until 30 September 2022.

The BTSCFA will be paid automatically to many families in the week beginning 13 July 2022. If you are paid automatically you don’t have to apply for the BTSCFA. You will get a letter before 20 June 2022 to let you know that you will be paid automatically.

If you haven't got a letter by 20 June 2022, you must apply for the Back to School Clothing and Footwear Allowance online. For more information on eligibility criteria and how to apply click here.

Have you ever received Jobseekers Transitional Payment?

Are you receiving or have you received Jobseekers Transitional Payment? If so, we would love to hear about your experiences!

One Family has partnered with researchers from Trinity College Dublin and University College Cork to learn more about the experiences of people in receipt of Jobseekers Transitional Payment.
The research team are seeking people to interview for this independent study on parents’ experiences of Jobseekers Transitional Payment and all participation is anonymous.

Interviews will be held online or in person depending on your preference and location. If you are interested in taking part, please contact the research team by emailing Margaret Scanlon at: m.scanlon@ucc.ie.

The research is being carried out by a team in University College Cork and Trinity College Dublin, in association with One Family. It is funded by an Irish Research Council New Foundations Grant.
