Newbold's Food and Libations

This Jenkintown spot came from a recommendation from a reader in 2020 (Thanks EB!), and it took us a bit of time to get here. With only a few forays into this area in the past, we cruised past Newbold’s Food and Libations as we surveyed the area around the restaurant. Jenkintown looks to be a quaint borough town split by its main street of Old York Road (Route 611). The downtown has held its own, maintaining a business presence along the main thoroughfare.

Every time we travel through Jenkintown we are reminded of “The Goldbergs” TV series which is centered in Jenkintown where the family lives and features many spots around the Delaware Valley. As we drove around the borough center, I looked for evidence of the JTP (Jenkintown Posse), a creation of teen character Barry Goldberg on the sitcom. As a bonus for our readers, I’d like to mention we made a stop at Joe’s Market in Glenside for some store made roast beef and chip steak. There are spots in Norristown to get some Italian Roast Pork (like Sessano’s or Venezia’s), but Joe’s Market  is a great go-to spot for deli sliced roast beef for hot or cold sandwiches. (Thank me later.)

When at Five Saints Distillery grab a bloody!

At a recent visit to Five Saints Distillery for the Norristown Chamber of Commerce May networking mixer, not only did we get a chance to tour the awesome facility, but also were able to grab one of their Bloody Mary's (and boy were we impressed)... Not too thick like some made with Bloody Mary mix, but rather a spicy and smooth concoction with their Premium 80 proof, gluten free Vodka (serving as the center piece) sourced from corn grown right in Norristown at the Farm Park! How cool is that?!

Do yourselves a favor, and try out Fave Saints Distilling, and get involved with the Norristown Chamber if you get the chance to. BOTH top notch organizations, operated by top notch folks!

...the rest of Ron's column

Newbold’s opened in Jenkintown in the Spring of 2020 with a dual storefront, the restaurant and  bar section sharing a pizzeria portion of the restaurant that took over the space previously occupied by Leila’s. We parked in the municipal parking lot behind the restaurant (for the low cost of just $0.25 for a thirty minutes). We entered the restaurant past some outdoor dining tables and proceeded down the steps through the rear entrance into the pizzeria area. The hostess asked us if we would be ordering pizza or if we desired to sit in the restaurant’s bar area. Though we had a slight interest in pizza and wanted to check it out for this review, we decided to sit in the restaurant area. The waitress arrived to take our drink orders and I chose a Yuengling lager and DW Sherri chose an Allagash Witte from the list of seven draft beers choices (supplemented by a dozen bottle and can choices.)

Serving American fare, the menu has a variety of appetizers and entrees selections. Salad choices of Roasted Beet Salad ,Spring Mix Salad, and Caesar Salad are supplemented by appetizers (Fried Brussels Sprouts, Escargot with Garlic Butter, Ricotta Gnocchi with a Sage Brown Butter Sauce, Potato Croquettes, Cheese/Charcuterie Plate, Charred Broccoli & Cauliflower, and Pasta with Braised Pork). Entrée choices include Fish of the Day with Spinach & White Wine Butter Sauce, Breaded Chicken Cutlet, Pasta with Shrimp & Creamy Cajun Sauce, Mushroom Risotto, Fried Chicken Sandwich, Pork Chop with Sweet Potatoes and Brussels Sprouts, Pan Roasted Scallops with Potatoes Lyonnaise, Newbold’s Bacon Jam Burger, and a Beyond Veggie Burger.

Since we were here to check the place out, we asked about having a pizza to start our meal with the intention of taking leftovers home. The waitress informed us we are not allowed to order pizza on the restaurant side, despite pizza oven being less than 10 feet from where I was sitting. We explained to the waitress that we just wanted to try the  pizza and we intended to order entrees from the restaurant menu. No go – a house rule.

Ordering from the restaurant menu, we decided to start with Potato Croquettes as an appetizer. Three breaded spheres of seasoned mashed potatoes were deep fried and served with Newbold’s Secret Sauce (a version of Remoulade sauce). Though not worthy of a creative patent, they croquettes were good and are recommended for those potato fans out there.

I chose the waitresses suggested Newbold’s Bacon Jam Burger and DW Sherri chose the Breaded Chicken Sandwich. The Burger and Chicken were cooked appropriately, and the sandwiches were served with fresh hot fries and both sandwiches were good enough for a future reorder.

DW Sherri went over to the pizzeria area and grabbed the “pizzeria“ menu which listed the same appetizer offerings of the restaurant with the addition of ten pizza choices, including a red or white Detroit Style pizza. So we ordered a pizza (half plain/half sausage and pepper) to take home and picked it up on the way out. Strangely enough, the pizza was added to our restaurant table bill instead of needing to be paid separate in the pizzeria, so we ended up tipping our waitress for the pizza we bought without her assistance. I understand Newbold’s may want to prevent diners from taking restaurant space for pizza consumption, but I thought it was a bit odd to expect diner’s preferences upon entry.

I grabbed our pizza on our way out  - still warm and looking appetizing, the bite I took from the Sausage Pepper half at the car was good (my rating 7/10) and would have tasted a bit better washed down with a lager. I’d return to try their other pizza varieties if I am in the area.

If you are in the Jenkintown area, stop and check out Newbold’s for lunch or dinner with consideration of your seating choice if you intend to order pizza.

Reservations through OpenTable, outdoor dining available (overlooks parking area).
