2022 Free Summer Meals for Kids

A dozen locations around the Rapid City area will provide free meals for kids this summer.

The four organizations that operate the sites start serving meals next week, on either May 31 or June 1, and include the Club for Boys, Rapid City Area Schools, the YMCA of Rapid City, and Youth & Family Services. All of the sites serve lunch; most serve breakfast too.

The USDA's Summer Food Service Program (SFSP) reimburses approved providers for meals served to kids 18 and younger. Adults 19 and older who accompany kids to the local sites (parents/grandparents/older siblings) can eat for free this summer as well, thanks to funding secured through Collective Impact Black Hills and ongoing partnerships between the agencies and Meals on Wheels Western South Dakota (for meals served to those 60+).

"We have been able to cover the cost of many adult meals in previous years, but grant funding did not always last through the summer months," said Carrie Robley, Programs Manager for the Black Hills Area Community Foundation, the backbone for the Food Security Initiative. "With additional philanthropic support this year, we are able to ensure parents can get a well-balanced meal right alongside their kids."
