What it looks like isn't important right now. . .
First You Have To Write It . . .

"I don't know," she said, "I have this story in me that needs to come out. I know I have a book in me, at least one. But," she says . . .

I'm standing at my kitchen counter. My notebook opened to a page where I have written her name in the top left-hand corner, underneath the date. It's March, Spring in the South Bay, and the wind has kicked up outside, and my wind chimes are singing. I'm holding my pen. Ready to write. I like to take notes when I speak with a potential new client. Not client. Student. Either way, you get my drift.

So, I know what she's going to say next. I've heard it before. I know she's concerned with form. With structure. With how it's going to turn out, look on the page. I know she's distracting herself. She needs to write. Just write. She needs to let go of all the structure and form stuff and just write it down. Put it on the page.

This is what happens. Writers distract themselves. Then they say things like, I didn't know where the story was going, or I didn't know if it should be a memoir or fiction, or, I didn't want my mom to read it or so many things that get in the way of writing the darn thing. Listen, if you don't write it, not only will your mom not read it, but no one will.

You gotta get it on the page.

And if you want to hit writer's block (you know writer's block, right), then worry about form. Worry about what it's going to look like. Worry about what it's going to be about. Worry. Don't write. Worry.

She's worrying. She's not writing. And it's not the first time I've heard it and it won't be the last time I'll hear the words that come after her but.

"I just don't know what it will look like," she says. "I'm thinking memoir, but I can't decide."

What if she were to just write it?
What if you were to just write it? What if you were to just write? Just write and stop worrying.

And, I am offering you the opportunity to do just that. To just write. Join a special Adventures in Writing starting in Wednesday, June 8th, 2:30--4 pm.
