Memorial Sunday
This Sunday is a special day in the life of our congregation each year at Woodlawn UMC.  On the Sunday nearest Memorial Day each year, we read the list of memorials that have been put into service over the past year, along with the names of those being remembered by each memorial.

Family and friends of those being remembered are invited to attend, and to stand as the memorial for their loved one is being consecrated.

Memorials are a tradition in Scripture.  From stone pillars or stones set up to help God’s people remember specific events, to special feasts and holy days set apart to evoke a memory of God’s goodness, memorials appear often in the Bible.  Even the rainbow, stretched across the sky following the great flood was set as a memorial…to call to mind God’s promise to Noah to never destroy the world again by flood.

I do hope you can be with us for worship at 9 or 10 am this Sunday, as we remember those who have gone ahead of us into God’s great reward and for whom we give thanks to the Lord.

Until Sunday,

A Word From Our Youth Director

“Even youths will faint and be weary, and the young will fall exhausted; but those who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength, they shall mount up with wings like eagles, they shall run and not be weary, they shall walk and not faint.” – Isaiah 40:30-31

School is out for the summer!  Time to relax and renew ourselves from the exhausting work throughout the school year.  Or so it used to be.  Now it seems like summers have become even more hectic than the school year itself.  We fill up our summers with camps, baseball games, swim meets, yardwork, chores around the house, and all kinds of plans to keep our kids doing something productive.  Even when we take a vacation, it can become a chore.  Some even respond to work e-mail and phone calls on vacation.

Our society has lost the ability to rest and renew.  We often feel guilty if we aren’t being productive.  Yet the need to rest is a Biblical imperative.  From the very beginning, God instilled rest into our weekly routine.  Isaiah tells us that when we wait for the Lord, we will renew our strength.  Jesus tells us that he will provide rest for our souls.

This summer, find some time to rest.  Take a few moments to let go of your busy life – and the guilt of not doing anything – and be still with God.  Take the opportunity to renew yourself.  Only then can you rise up with God’s strength, ready for whatever may come your way.

Thanks,

Bryce Fuhrmann
Youth Director

How many ways can you send a message? There are so many unique ways! Special deliveries are the best but even better are the messages found in each package. This month, we are going to look at the most important message that was ever sent out and how we are meant to be the ones delivering it. Kids are God’s messengers who can share the stories of God’s miracles and help. Get kids involved in helping God’s message go everywhere because God delivers everyone!

We are back to regular Sunday morning activities! Join us for Wiggles & Worship Sunday mornings during the contemporary service.

VBS

Moment for Mission

Comfort Food (Funeral Meal Ministry)

When a loved one dies there is often a long list of things that need to be done. There are calls, decisions and plans to be made, all on top of experiencing grief and deep loss. If you’ve lost a loved one, perhaps you can relate. One way we as a church can help ease this burden is by providing a meal and hospitality for families following funeral services. This allows the family time to connect and grieve together. This is truly a ministry of compassion and healing.

There are key ingredients to make this ministry possible, financial support and volunteers.
You can support this ministry by giving donations to the Comfort Food Ministry or by volunteering to help serve these meals.

Please consider giving financially or giving the gift of your time to help us ensure that families are provided a meal after funeral services at the church, at no cost to them.
If you are interested in volunteering please contact the church office.

Thank you!
Giving remains critical to our church’s mission and ministry. You may mail contributions to the church at 431 S. Woodlawn Blvd. Derby, KS  67037 or

A Letter from Jack and Jill Scholarship Parent

"I am writing to express my sincere gratitude to the members of the Woodlawn Methodist Church for making the Jack and Jill Scholarship possible. I was thrilled to learn of this offered scholarship for my child to attend our favorite local preschool. There are many families facing financial hardships currently and we are deeply appreciative of your support. This is our second kiddo to attend Jack and Jill over the years. We were at a point with our current kiddo that we needed this extra support this time around. Everette has made many friends and has been in the care of the educators at Jack and Jill for the 2021-2022 school year and this opportunity has greatly impacted his social, emotional and behavioral skills! His life has been truly enriched by this opportunity we have already enrolled him for the 2022-2023 school year, and a gracious thank you to the women at Jack and Jill that make us feel at home so far away from our support system as a military family!"

Early Response Team Training (ERT) - La Vista, NE 6/8/2022

Not a first response group of emergency workers nor a recovery rebuild or repair team: the purpose of ERTs is to fill the specific need in the early days after a disaster of being a Christian presence of the church. ERTs respond only after they have been requested by the affected community. Come learn where United Methodists are involved, what is a disaster, how do we prepare for a disaster, what we can do when a disaster strikes, how the disaster response plan is activated, and how to be a caring presence in communities facing disaster recover. You will learn how we avoid harming the recovery process for individuals.

.

The following prayer was written by Aimee Cox, director of children's ministry at Christ United Methodist Church, and was published on May 24, 2022, by United Methodist Communications:

Holy One, Our thoughts and prayers are with the families and friends of those in Uvalde, Texas. We recognize, however, that this isn’t enough. Mobilize us, God. We do not want to be desensitized to violence. Stir something deep within that empowers us to stand up to violence of all kinds but most especially to the violence that hurts your sweet children. Give us words to speak truth to power. Show us how to use our hands, our feet, and our hearts because we know that you require more from us in these times. Provide us with the strength only you can provide as we seek to protect all of your children. We pray for the healing of those who are in critical condition, for the parents and families who are grieving, and for this community who has suffered a great loss.

Amen
