 Center of the Month:
South Southwest MHTTC

The South Southwest MHTTC is housed in the Texas Institute for Excellence in Mental Health at University of Texas at Austin. The South Southwest MHTTC serves U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Region 6, including Arkansas, Louisiana, New Mexico, Oklahoma, and Texas. The South Southwest MHTTC supports Project AWARE recipients by providing technical assistance in the areas including best practices for universal screening, the creation of surveys to gather educator input for local level and state level strategic planning and the creation of safe and supportive schools curriculum and trauma and grief informed training.

Natalie Fikac serves as the MHTTC Project AWARE Liaison from the South Southwest MHTTC. She serves the following Project AWARE grantees:
  • Arkansas State Department of Education (2018)
  • Louisiana State Department of Education (2018 and 2021)
  • New Mexico Public Education Department (2021)
  • Oklahoma State Department of Education (2018, 2020, 2021)
  • Texas State Education Agency (2018 and 2021)
The South Southwest MHTTC has supported their Project AWARE grantees for the past four years by building capacity at the state and regional level, hosting quarterly Project AWARE state leadership meetings for school mental health leaders to share trends, findings, best practices and to provide opportunities for networking. Currently, the South Southwest MHTTC is developing a three-part trauma and grief training with the following components: Building a Practice to Support Educator Wellness, Building a Practice for Supporting Students, and Leading a Grief and Trauma Sensitive School System. This Training of Trainers (TOT) will train the 20 education service center (ESC) school mental health teams in Texas to train school district leads.

Please reach out to Natalie if you have questions about Project AWARE school mental health training needs in the South Southwest region.
