Meet Your New Recreation and Conservation Ranger
In partnership with the Town of Crested Butte, we’re excited to introduce Landan Schaller, your new Recreation and Conservation Ranger. Landan has a background in Environmental Anthropology and is currently working on his master’s degree in Environmental Management at Western Colorado University. Throughout the summer you will find Landan at various high-traffic locations including Gunsight Bridge and the new Slate River Boat Launch in town. He’ll be helping educate recreaters on safe and sustainable practices as well as reminding river users of the voluntary no-float period in place to protect the Great Blue Heron rookery now through July 15. Please stop by and say hello whenever you see him at our local rivers and trailheads!

Responsible Recreation at Long Lake
As we enter the busy summer season, who else has been dreaming of a dip in Long Lake? It has been just over two years since the Crested Butte Land Trust completed a 750-acre federal land exchange to protect Long Lake, one of Crested Butte’s most treasured open spaces. Since then, the Land Trust has been working with the community to identify short- and long-term solutions to better manage recreational use and conservation values at this beloved resource. Our team is focused on revegetating the area, developing official trails to prevent further erosion, and closing off undesignated trails that may infringe on private property and working grazing lands. As we continue this planning process, thank you for taking note of these friendly responsible recreation reminders and for helping us take care of the spaces and places we love.

See you out on the trail!
  • Stay on designated trails and tread lightly.
  • Respect private property and working grazing lands.
  • Park in designated parking areas.
  • Pack out whatever you bring.
  • No e-bikes, motorbikes, or motor boats.
  • Beware of cold water, supervise children, and remember to bring a PFD or a floatation device when swimming.
  • Keep dogs on leash or under strict voice control, and clean up after your pets.
  • No camping or campfires.
  • Please give the wildlife plenty of space and respect. No hunting is allowed. Standard Colorado Parks and Wildlife fishing regulations apply.
