Luke Fry Architecture & Interior Design Broadens Presence with Mansfield Studio Launch.

One of Australia’s brightest young designers and owner of the eponymous studio, Luke Fry will expand his successful practice with the upcoming launch of his Mansfield studio, which will continue to showcase the refined, purposeful and design-led properties for which he is known.

Born and raised in Benalla, Luke has established family ties in the North East high country region spanning generations, and his parents and brother still live there. After 20 years of study and work in Melbourne, he and his family relocated to Mansfield, and opening a studio to represent this new chapter seemed a natural next step.

“I’ve always loved the area and have spent a lot of time there over the years. We moved for lifestyle reasons, but the new office and projects are an unexpected bonus. Expansion into a new area has opened up possibilities, which has given the team and I new energy and excitement,” said Luke, who will be building another family home in Mansfield in the near future.

“The rural, alpine areas provide beautiful landscapes and views in which to create amazing lifestyle-driven homes. Holidays homes are always special places for the owners as they act as a retreat where fond memories are created,” said Luke. He hopes Mount Buller will become a strong focus given its vast potential in the residential, hospitality, retail and hotel/accommodation spaces, with projects already in the works.

Many of Luke’s team have strong ties with the region, including their most recent staff member, Amelia Smith, who joined as a graduate architect and has a long-standing history with Mansfield. Additionally, Practice Manager Joey Cooney, has been connected to Mansfield for more than 40 years, as the owner of a wedding venue just outside of town.

GLEN IRIS HOUSE

Luke Fry Architecture & Interior Design Reinvigorates Period Home in Glen Iris.

Given full creative reign to modernise an unrenovated period home in Glen Iris, Luke Fry’s signature pared-back aesthetic brings a contemporary edge to this spacious residence designed with family gatherings in mind.

The clients are a retired couple who previously downsized to a large penthouse after their adult children left home. After becoming grandparents, they wished to return to a generously sized home with a pool and backyard where their grandchildren could play, and their kids could come and go as they pleased.

Hidden behind the existing building, Luke Fry said the home’s updated design responds to its context via a connecting glass link.

“This allows both the period home and the new pavilion to co-exist respectfully on the same site. The pavilion hugs the southern boundary, which maximises the northern light into the home and landscaped areas, including the pool,” he said.

The design of the Glen Iris house showcases the firm’s trademark edited spaces featuring simple forms, while the rear pavilion curves were inspired by the existing arches at the front of the home. The green kitchen and carpet were driven by the clients who were keen to incorporate colour.

“My favourite element of the project is the curved concrete rendered walls of the pavilion, and in particular the bullnose rounded corners, which gives an incredibly soft language to an otherwise solid construction,” said Luke.

Design highlights of the home include its curved concrete walls and fireplace, Signorino natural stone, rattan/timber joinery and its distinctive green kitchen. Also worth noting are the Made by Storey timber flooring and Fizi wall lights by Articolo, which add to the home’s unique character.
