Let's Celebrate!

Dear Parents
The Year 6 residential gave the children the opportunity to practise their skills of working as a team, communicating with each other and further developed their self-awareness. And, great fun was had by all!

Back at base camp, the younger children seized the opportunity to compete in our rounders and cricket matches this week against other schools- well done children!

Finally, we thoroughly enjoyed taking part in the Commonwealth Games baton relay this week, and in the Queen's Platinum Jubilee celebrations today. I hope you have a royally wonderful Bank Holiday weekend.

Nursery

In Bees, we have started to celebrate the Queen's Platinum Jubilee. We have enjoyed making royal crowns and had fun dressing up as kings and queens. We have also enjoyed making lots of yummy cakes for the Queen to enjoy and getting messy with coloured spaghetti.

'Shiver me timbers!' what an exciting week we have had in Ladybirds. The children have loved exploring and dressing up as pirates. We have found lots of hidden treasures and been very creative making our own pirate hats.

Reception

Over the last few weeks we have been exploring the story of Jack and the Beanstalk. The children have loved acting out the story in the playground and taking on the different roles- it is hard to know who is hiding behind the masks! We had some fantastically scary giants, some angry mummies and some very amusing Jack characters.

Miss Allen and Mrs Walsh

Year 1

This week, I must say how delighted I am with Year 1’s reading; they are racing ahead with Accelerated Reader and romping through our reading scheme books with enthusiasm.

In Maths, they have been revising halves and doubles, finding multiples of 2, 10 and 5 and using clues to play ‘Guess my Number.’

During DT lessons, the children have been exploring, making and using sliders which bring their 2D pictures to life, creating unexpected movement.

Mrs Smith and Mrs Brooker

Year 2
This week we started having our lunch in the Senior Dining Room which has been very successful; the children coped really well and have enjoyed the choices available.

In Science, we have continued to learn about pollination and are becoming proficient at naming the parts of a plant.

Ending the week with our Queen's Platinum Jubilee celebration was a fitting end to the half term.

Mrs Bleasdale
Year 3
In Science this week, Year 3 have been investigating plants and what they need to grow and survive and the functions of each part of the plant.

In English, we watched 'The Blue Umbrella' animation film by Pixar and we wrote our own version of the story using adjectives and a range of ambitious vocabulary.

In Art, we recently designed and created some coastal scene using felt with the artist Mrs Ferguson and Mrs Hine; the completed pieces look amazing!

Mrs Blinston
Year 4
In Year 4 we shine brightly! We are really enjoying our new Science topic all about electricity and exploring how complete circuits work with different components.

Translations and co-ordinates have kept us busy in our Maths lessons this week; we have become very good at giving instructions such as '2 left and 4 downwards'.

We have spent some time this week discussing our residential trip which takes place the first day back after half term. We are excited and a little nervous as this is our first time away.

Mrs Briggs
Year 5
This week in Science, Year 5 began a new topic on the properties of materials, testing different objects to see if they are thermal conductors, electrical conductors and/or attracted to a magnet. They learned that a material's properties are principally what make it useful and are very numerous - brittle, absorbent, buoyant, flexible, transparent... the list goes on and on!

Sadie had exciting news this week - she was awarded Fylde Hockey Player of 2022 in her age group, well done to her, she is a great ambassador for AKS Sport.

Mrs Whitaker and Mr Worthington
Year 6
Year 6 enjoyed a fantastic residential trip to Condover Hall this week, JCA's flagship activity centre- a Grade 1 Elizabethan Mansion set in 78 acres of fantastic Shropshire countryside and gardens.
The children experienced history alongside beautiful surroundings, whilst enjoying a fantastic combination of outdoor and indoor adventurous activities.
They were challenged in many different ways, facing their fears on the activities at height, as well as enjoying the many team building activities on offer. The children were a pleasure to be with and their behaviour was exemplary. Look out for a full editorial and photos coming soon!

Times Tables Rock Stars
Times Tables Rock Stars (ttrockstars.com)
All children across the Prep School use TT Rock Stars and enjoy seeing their times tables recall speed develop, and subsequently this improves their problem- solving skills.

The children from Year 2 to 6 have their own individual account, username, password, and a Rock Star name as well. If you have any problems logging onto the system, please contact the Class Teacher or myself.

MFL News
In MFL this week, Reception have continued learning German colour, Year 2 completed their work on describing family members and Year 4 began to look at an interesting Spanish festival called 'La Tomatina'.  In Year 5, we continued to look at adjectival agreement in French and used a computer-based game to help us.

Sports News
What a way to start the Queen's Platinum Jubilee celebrations with the welcoming of the Common Wealth Games relay baton under our very own Jubilee arch. To be part of such a fantastic event with 57 schools across Lancashire participating in this event, AKS gave a very warm welcome to students from Lytham Hall Park. Year 5 pupils Isaac and Katy were the proud runners along with Mrs Ilhan, Mrs Brown and Mr Walmsley who ran to Ansdell Primary School where the baton was handed over for it to continue on its next leg of the journey.

Also on Monday, all our Year 3 and 4 students took to the field and welcomed MGSB for three fun and action packed games of cricket. On Wednesday, our Year 5 boys and girls played cricket and rounders vs Rossall. In windy but sunny conditions, both teams did well and had a fun afternoon playing as a year group and developing their skills. Well done to all who took part.
