UPEI Class of 2022 Mix and Mingle
We had a fantastic time at the return of the Grad Class Mix and Mingle this year! Thank you to all who were able to attend. During this event, Priya Jain, president of the Class of 2022, took a moment to address the class, and we wanted to share her words with you below.
My name is Priya Jain and I'm graduating this year in Business.
I'm so glad to be part of the UPEI alumni, and I want to thank the alumni for welcoming us today.
I moved to PEI after growing up and starting university in Ontario. When I came here, I instantly noticed the friendliness of UPEI's small community, and I was welcomed by the school's strong international community. The support and resources that UPEI gave me make me know that this school will always be there for its grads. No matter where we go from here—whether that's building a life in PEI or somewhere else around the world—we will always feel connected to anyone who graduated from UPEI and lived on this Island.
UPEI has helped me grow as a person, and I know that graduating from this school will bring good things to all the grads. For the ones not born in PEI, surviving the winters here shows that you can do anything.
With the community I see here in PEI, I encourage the grads to stick together, help each other, and thrive from each other's successes. We can achieve great things in our future. Congrats for being 2022 alumni!
Priya Jain, BBA’22

Caught in a Changing Society: St. Dunstan’s University 1950–1969 - Book Launch
Alumnus Leonard Cusack (SDU’69) is the author of a new book, Caught in a Changing Society: St. Dunstan’s University 1950–1969 (Island Studies Press, 2022). A book launch will be held at UPEI on June 8, 2022, at 3:30 pm, in the Faculty of Sustainable Design Engineering, Room 128.
The book chronicles the golden years of expansion at an esteemed Catholic university. Campus life was tight-knit, with students participating in sports teams, drama and music performances, social activities, and mandatory classes and religious services under the watchful eyes of the priests and Sisters. As social mores changed and mini-skirts appeared on campus in the mid-1960s, students demanded freedoms and direct representation, while the administration fought for much-needed government subsidies and faced the challenges of an uncertain future.
With Prince of Wales College becoming a university, the province couldn’t support two post-secondary institutions. The ensuing debate led to the closure of the 114-year-old St. Dunstan’s University and the creation of the University of Prince Edward Island in 1969.
