Wales DTP Capabilities and Careers Conference 2022

Thank you to everyone who contributed to the Wales DTP's annual Capabilities and Careers Conference, held on 27th-28th April.  The event, which focussed on Methods for Critical Social Science, included lively engagement from academics and doctoral students on topics including race, gender and sexuality, disability, child health and educational inequality.  An EDI townhall session, led by DTP students Melissa Martin (Science & Technology Studies, Cardiff University) and Ferrida Ponce (Psychology, Bangor University), gathered insightful feedback which will feed into the DTP's future work on EDI.

The event featured a keynote talk from Professor Sara Ryan on qualitative research.  A recording of her talk is available online.

Wales DTP Student Report on Language Learning

Wales DTP student Elin Arfon (Global Language Based Area Studies, Cardiff University), whose research focuses on plurilingual education, recently completed an internship with the Welsh Government.  The results of Elin's work have been published by the Welsh Government in a report entitled 'Supporting progression in language learning: assessment of the curriculum in Wales'.

ACCESS Summer School

The first ACCESS Summer School, with a focus on learning to communicate research beyond academia, takes place 14-16 September at Cumberland Lodge, Berkshire.  Attendance is open to PhD Researchers (at least 24 months in, full-time equivalent) and Early Career Researchers (up to 24 months post-PhD, full-time equivalent) who are working in any area of environmental social science.  This might include (but is not limited to) work in the areas of decarbonisation, sustainable development, biodiversity, land management, nature engagement, transport and sustainable consumption. Applicants from a diverse range of backgrounds are welcome and a limited number of funded places are on offer to support those with limited financial means to attend.

The closing date for applications is 14 June. For further details and to apply visit the Wales DTP website.

Congratulations!

Congratulations to Wales DTP students Suzanna Nesom (Economics, Cardiff University) and Anneka Owens (Empirical Studies in Law, Cardiff University) on their recent successful applications for a Welsh Government internship.  Both will be working on a project looking at an analysis of National Survey for Wales equality data, for a 3-month period commencing later this month.

Academic Publishing and Open Access

The Wales DTP is offering an online training session on academic publishing and open access, on 8 June.  During the session, participants will hear from Dr Charalampos Efstathopoulos (journal editor), Joey Soehardjojo (former ESRC Wales DTP Postdoctoral Fellow), Dr Lizzie Brophy (Publisher, WILEY), and Helen Sharp (Publications Officer, Cardiff University) about writing an article and how to get published, including finding a journal, the peer review process, and up-to-date information about Open Access. There will also be an opportunity to put questions to the expert panel.  The event is free of charge and is open to all ESRC Wales DTP students.  For further information and registration, visit the Wales DTP website.

CCRI Winter School

The Countryside and Community Research Institute's (CCRI) annual Winter School took place on 3-4th March, at the University of Gloucestershire's Park Campus.  It provided a stage for discussion on cross-boundary engagements, and a space for doctoral researchers to network with peers and present their work on a range of topics including public health and rural flood management.  The event was organised by Wales DTP student Aimee Morse (University of Gloucestershire) and Dr Dan Keech, with the support of Wales DTP small grant funding.

For more news on the CCRI and next year's Winter School follow CCRI on Twitter @CCRI_UK.
