Dear Greenhorns,

Now more than ever, we need your support to continue serving young farmers through media production, educational workshops and events, power-building, networking, research, experimentation, open-sourcing, publications, and more.

For 15 years we have built a national community of current and aspiring agriculturists, providing inspiration, guidance, and resources for the next generation of farmers.
Greenhorns manages a huge volume of projects for its size, and that takes a lot of hard work – and money. From our new Myco Buoy Project, to Earthlife.tv, to the New Farmer’s Almanac, the Greenhorns hive is buzzing behind the scenes bringing everything to life.

Oh, and did we mention that we just successfully kicked a mining company out of our town of Pembroke? The work never ends!

One of Greenhorns’ core offerings is our summer event series. We host over a dozen workshops, concerts, and public events each season in Pembroke, Maine – you can check out this year’s schedule here, and follow along on Instagram. We look forward to seeing you up here this season!

We strive to keep these events affordable, accessible, intersectional, and engaging for those able to attend – and for those who watch ‘from away’ as they say Downeast. As such, we are always looking for additional funding for our summer programming.

Here’s a few forthcoming projects we’re propagating:
  • Seaweed Commons Position Paper
  • Habitat Everywhere Guidebook
  • New Farmer’s Almanac Volume VI: “Adjustments and Accommodations”
  • Bioneers “Earthilfe” podcast series, “ The Desert is Coming”
  • Earthlife.tv episodes 2-4, pending funding
  • Myco Lab @ Greenhorns build-out
  • A check-out-able collection at Reversing Hall Library
  • and much more!
So much happening! We cannot do this work without the support of our worldwide community of passionate agrarians.

Myco Buoy Workshops
Greenhorns hosted two workshops in April with mycologist Sue Van Hook that explored the wonderful world of mycelium-based products and their application in aquaculture. Participants heard a lecture on Sue's decade-plus of research, then got hands-on experience growing myco buoys with ground hemp stalks and inoculated substrate. The finished products will be used and monitored in a collaborative experiment with seven sea farms in Downeast Maine. We look forward to building out the Greenhorns Myco Lab with Sue's expertise, and to creating viable alternatives to plastic in aquaculture!
Campus Updates

The campus continues to grow and improve day by day! Our facilities include Reversing Hall Library and event space, a farm store opening in June, a cooperative commercial kitchen coming this season, a farm with an outdoor kitchen and classroom, meeting spaces, tent platforms and various auxiliary places of habitation for staff and visitors. We'll soon have the capacity to host over 40 people at a time for educational trainings, conferences, and meetings -- with wifi!

Our Downeast hub of learning, art, agriculture, and celebration is all coming together. We can't wait to share what we've been working on with you all; your support will help make this place a happy, buzzing destination for farmers and artists of all ages.
