Parenting

Talking to your child when something scary happens from PBS Kids

“We cannot fully ‘news proof’ our home when unsettling events happen in the world, but we can help kids navigate what they hear through simple, responsive, reassuring conversations,” says parenting expert Eric Rasmussen. As we all struggle to respond to the tragic events in Uvalde, Texas, we have gathered resources to help you and your family manage these difficult moments. As Fred Rogers famously said, “I am always comforted by realizing that there are still so many helpers — so many caring people in this world.” We hope that these resources bring your family some comfort today.

Why brain building with your child matters so much…

Your child’s brain grows the fastest from birth through age 5! Helping them learn now gets them ready for school, friends, and life.

Babies are born ready to learn. And you have what it takes to help them!

Every time we connect with young children, it's not just their eyes that light up—it's their brains, too. Vroom helps all parents discover that they already have what it takes to boost their child's learning.

Celebrating Milestones FREE CHILD CHECK

Child Check is a Universal and Free Program to verify that children are meeting their fine/gross motor, language and social/emotional/behavioral developmental milestones. These skills are important for Readiness to Learn and Kindergarten Readiness.

Available to EVERY child in Clallam County between the ages of 18 months and entrance into kindergarten.

Child Check is parent centered and focused on helping parents come to a better understanding of their child’s development, develop better parenting practices and learn more about community resources that can aid them in parenting.

Mind in the Making Skill-Building Opportunities

Turn challenging moments into skill-building opportunities.

Picky Eating, Bedtime Fears, Meltdowns, Constant Crying, Sibling Rivalry: what's a parent to do?

Mind in the Making is here to help you discover the skills that every child needs. We've researched the questions parents most frequently ask each other, their families and the professionals in their lives. And we’ve taken those questions and created 1-page guides for parents and professionals to help them turn common behavioral issues into opportunities to promote life skills in children.

Lego Games!!!!

Lego is a staple in a lot of families’ toy cupboards. It’s horrible to step on, but what other toy can be built into an infinite number of designs, taken apart, and constructed into a whole new structure?

I know I could sit and play with it for hours (who says it’s just for kids?). But what if Lego wasn’t just a toy that kids sat at the table to play with? What if Lego could be used in games and activities that get kids moving?

Get your kids up and active with our list of Lego games. They’re sure to “build” excitement (see what I did there?) into your young inventor’s life.
