Gun Violence: Why We Always Assign Blame to the Wrong Place

Texas hero says mass shooting at Texas school is symptomatic of bigger issues; suggests it is time to consider Constitutional carry
Sutherland Springs, Texas – Two days before the beginning of summer break, an 18-year-old armed with a pistol and rifle walked into the school, opening fire, killing 19 students and two adults. Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas, is roughly 80 miles west of San Antonio. The suspect, who killed his grandmother earlier, was killed after attempting to fire upon enforcement officers, hitting two but leaving them with minor injuries. Salvador Rolando Ramos was a loner from a broken family who got angry with his mom over Wi-Fi.

As soon as the shootings occurred, the left was quick to point to guns as the chief problem. There were no questions about violent video games, angry and disenfranchised youth, or a culture that minimizes human life even before birth. The blame was quickly placed on guns. We have methodically removed God from our public schools and lived as if post-enlightenment secular humanism is the answer; a worldview that believes in the inherent betterment of mankind rather than in his lostness.

Stephen Willeford is a spokesman for Gun Owners of America. In 2017 he stopped the Sutherland Springs, Texas mass shooting, acting as the “good guy with a gun.” As a Christian and as an advocate for “the right of the people to keep and bear Arms” he believes gun violence is symptomatic of deeper issues – issues that have more to do with the breakdown of the family, the decline in “the rule of law”, disrespect for authority, and the worship of violence.

Willeford has always relied on his faith to guide his life, and his deep roots are a product of his family’s commitment to their community. In 2018, Governor Greg Abbott appointed Stephen to serve on the Texas Private Security Board. He is a member of the National Rifle Association (NRA), is an NRA-certified instructor and a former assistant scoutmaster with the Boy Scouts of America.
