Happy June TARTans,
Holy heck! if the weather didn't tell us summer started this weekend, the amount of events below makes it clear that the season has begun. And what better way to kick off summer than getting out for some smart commuting. Next week is the 28th annual Smart Commute Week and is one of our favorite weeks at TART Trails. It's a time to be intentional in thinking about how we get around. It's a time to be purposeful in our choices and allow some time to try new experiences. But mostly, it's about the feeling of fun and comradery that you get seeing folks around town on their bikes, hopping on the bus or the casual hello as you walk. It's the smiles, nods, and waves from strangers all out and making their way by foot, bike or bus to where they want to go. And, of course, it's the amazing daily breakfasts! With the shift we've experienced over the last few years for many working from home, maybe it's a little more clear that smart commuting isn't just about going to work. It's about swapping out a car trip for a short bike to the grocery store. Trying your first Bayline trip as you head out to dinner in East Bay or the Commons. Helping your kids make their way to school on bike or foot (breakfasts make great bribes) or joining up with a Norte bike train (or maybe leading on of your own). The point is to try something new, maybe even get into a habit of more walking, riding and rolling, boosting your confidence in commuting, and most importantly, celebrating as a community our choices for healthier ways to move around. We can't wait to see faces old and new out and about next week. Come join the fun!

SPECIAL THANKS

Congrats and kudos to all the participants of the Bayshore Marathon this past weekend! What an exciting weekend on the peninsula! Thanks to the more than 50 volunteers who signed up to volunteer with TART Trails to hand out t-shirts. And thanks to event organizers and the Traverse City Track Club for bringing this event back with such great success!

Last month we had the pleasure of teaming up with partners at the Grand Traverse Land Conservancy and SEEDS on a two-day trail building training. Day one was spent in the classroom and day two was spent out in the field building the first segment of the Traverse Ridge Trail. Many thanks to our partners and the incredible volunteers who joined us. Learn more about the project here.

Many thanks to Paul Deyo and Brian Pugh for designing and building these handy dandy new brochure boxes. Thanks to their hard work, these will provide visitors and new trail users maps to help guide them on their adventures.

Many hands make light work. And many thanks to these students from Career Tech Center and their instructor Brian Matchett, for helping to tidy up the TART Transformation Take Flight landscaping plots. Stay tuned for even more interesting stops to see along this segment of the TART later this summer with art installation.

Big thanks to everyone who came out to make the return of the Spring Pumpkin Pedal a success! Special thanks to our hosts at Jolly Pumpkin and partners at Northern Michigan E3. And special shout out to Jimmy McKenna for making it all happen.

Thank you so much Cherry Capital Cycling Club and Tri-County Bicycle Association DALMAC Fund. With generous support from these two organizations, safety enhancements and trail improvements will be made to the Leelanau Trail this summer! Look for new signage at trail crossings, a water bottle filling station, and more. Thank you CCCC and DALMAC Fund for helping us raise the bar for nonmotorized trails in our region!

A big thank you to 4Front Credit Union for supporting the Recycle-A-Bicycle program through their Community Investment program. 4Front embraces the credit union philosophy of "People Helping People," working to enhance the lives of our community. We are so grateful!
