June 2022
MCC President's Observation Notes

The month of June heralds the arrival of high season in Miller. This issue of Miller Message is jam-packed with news and events and there are rumors of potentially many more events in the works. The pandemic is obviously over in this context.

Every event featured in Miller Message is entered into the MCC Community Calendar, which you can find here and on the MCC website. If you are a community organizer planning your next extravaganza, consult the calendar to make sure you're not double booking with someone else!

And as a subscriber to this newsletter, you can download the events you want in your personal calendar from the MCC Community Calendar very easily simply by clicking on the event.

Looking forward to a phenomenal summer!

George Rogge, President

Parking is available but temporarily restricted while work near Miller Station progresses. Vehicular and pedestrian access from Melton Road (US 20) will be closed, and the driveway from Old US 12/Dunes Hwy will remain open. Construction activities may occur on the shoulder of Old US 12/Dunes Hwy.

7th Avenue will be closed between Floyd and Lake Street beginning Thursday, May 19 for sewer relocation work. Local access will be allowed between Floyd and Hamilton. The work is expected to be completed by June 30, but may run through July 19 if needed. There will be lane restrictions on Old US 12, but access to Miller Station will be maintained. Paul H. Douglas Center for Environmental Education

Temporary Closure of Douglas Center - The national park’s Paul H. Douglas Center for Environmental Education is temporarily closed due to unsafe conditions on the pedestrian bridge that links the center to its parking lot on Lake Street.

The closure will remain in effect until a crosswalk is in place on Lake Street and a safe path from the parking lot to the crosswalk is established. The National Park Service is working with the City of Gary to get a safe crossing of Lake Street at the Douglas Center.

The pedestrian bridge is scheduled to be removed in June and will be replaced sometime within the next year.

The hiking trail through Miller Woods is open and a four-car parking lot on the west side of Lake Street remains open for the public. And you can still enjoy:

Friends of Marquette Park and Shoreline Committee

Our public officials were well represented at the Beach Public Safety and Parks Community Meeting May 12. Gary Police Department & Beach Patrol Simon Lillie, Gary Fire Department Dive Master David Evans, Lake County S.W.A.T. Commander Jim Stahl, Lake County Police Department Marine Unit Officer Jim Weller, Lake County Police Department Aviation Unit Pilot Randy Phillips, Gary Parks Department Superintendent Marianetta Barber, Gary Parks Pavilion Executive Director Kamishia Jackson, Gary Parks Aquatics Director Tawanna Lyons and Gary Parks Maintenance Supervisor Don Plohg did a great job sharing plans for the beach season.

Gary Police Department Beach Patrol, assigned specifically to our shoreline, began operations a week before Memorial Day. As Simon Lillie stated, “Our best kept secret is out.” Plan to see more enforcement of the laws (parking, speeding, etc.) with upgraded technology. No parking in bike paths. The beach parking lots close at 9:00 pm.

Lake County Sheriff’s Department also patrols our beaches and waters with more sophisticated equipment for rescues. If you see a problem on the water with boats, call 219-398-9033. Usually, if you hear the Lake County helicopter, it’s time to get off the beach.

Gary Fire Department has trained more officers to assist with rescues on the beach and in the water with new equipment. A reminder: the designated and guarded swimming areas are Marquette Park and Lake Street Beach. The beach from Montgomery Street to County Line Road is a boating and swimming beach where both boaters and swimmers are allowed. Inside the buoys is a no-wake zone for boats They must travel north/south only and respect swimmers..

Gary Parks Department is determining where to locate speed tables on the streets in Marquette Park to deter speeding. The speed limit in the park will be 20 miles per hour. The buoys are in before Memorial Day!! Lifeguards started duties on May 21. There is a definite schedule for trash pickup. The grass is cut professionally every week. The beach cleaner is fixed! The first Drive-In Movie Night is Saturday, May 28 at the large parking lot. Come see Batman. Beach Buds is back running the concession stand opening Memorial Day weekend. Wind-Down Wednesdays, Bourbon Nights, and a Food Fest are planned at the Pavilion.

Golf Cart Registration: call Vehicle Maintenance Department at 219-882-4011 to schedule an inspection.

Nelson Algren Museum of Miller Beach

The author of Mellencamp: American Troubadour speaks First Friday July 1 at 7:00 pm at the Nelson Algren 616 Sound Stage. David Masciotra, long time friend of the Nelson Algren Museum of Miller Beach and Indiana University Northwest teacher, discusses his biography of John Mellencamp and will autograph the new paperback version of his book. Savage teaches Chicago literature, history, and culture at Northwestern University and the Newberry Library of Chicago. He has led many tours for his students on the CTA, on bicycles, or in various vehicles and for the Chicago History Museum, on topics as varied as the 1893 World’s Fair, historic bars, and the history and design of Chicago’s hot dog stands. He is at work on a book about Chicago’s street grid and is the sort of person who has favorite bridges, viaducts, and alleys. He is a lifelong resident of Rogers Park, though he spends much of his free time on the South Side. $10.00 at the door.

Water Safety Society

Remember - The BEST day at the beach is a SAFE day at the beach. It's in your hands.
  1. Water safety is a personal responsibility.
  2. Do your research at www.coldwatersafety.org; www.glsrp.org and www.greatlakeswatersafety.org.
  3. Know and understand the different currents: long shore, off shore, and rip.
  4. Take swim lessons and understand swimming in a pool is VERY different than swimming in a lake. The waves come in one after the other with very little time to stand up between them and they will knock you down.
  5. Know there are sandbars with drop offs - some over your head.
  6. Understand that buoys are marine traffic guides - NOT a target to swim to.
  7. Practice practice practice - floating, treading water, bobs, swimming along shore to increase your endurance.
  8. Always be a dedicated water watcher. If you have kids at the beach with you WATCH THEM and do not be distracted by conversation, books or phone. Be in arms' reach of younger ones.
  9. Bring and wear life jackets!
  10. If you see a swimmer in distress call 911.
Bonus but obvious- Don't drink or get high near or around water and never when you are responsible for others!

ENJOY LAKE MICHIGAN and all water safely.  It is up to you, even in guarded areas!

Please visit our other sponsors, Indie Indie Bang Bang and Great Lakes Cafe, and thank them for their contributions to the event.

Last year's party was a blast and raised over $5000 for the Humane Society. Don't miss this one.

Saturdays, June 18, July 16 and August 20  Adopt-a-thons at Pet Supplies Plus, 1676 E Summit Street, Crown Point. Visit from 11:00 am to 3:00 pm and fall in love with one of our critters available through the store.

Saturdays, June 25, July 30, August 27 and September 24 at Albanese Candy Adopt-a-thons. Come for the sweet treats—both edible and four legged and take home a new four-legged friend.

Because of the construction related to the Double Tracking Project, there has been, and will continue to be, significant changes to the landscape on all boundaries of the Humane Society property. We have lost some of our dog-walking space and we are hemmed in by new roads and parking areas. We are making plans to adapt to these changes, including new landscaping (with the help of the Miller Garden Club) and new fencing. We hope to raise money through donations to cover the cost of these very necessary changes.

Come by our location at 6100 Melton Road and check out all our residents. We get new pets every day. Don’t forget to check our Facebook page and our website to see a wish list of needed supplies and a connection to AMAZON that allows you to have items sent directly to us. Please be sure to select Humane Society Northwest Indiana as your charity while shopping www.smile.amazon.com.
