Claro  Results

Three CLAROs went to Manchester last weekend.

John Lebeter fearlessly took on both days - two full length urban courses no less - and performed well on both days.   Quentin and Ruth just went over for the Sunday UKUL event (bus and train from Harrogate to Manchester worked nicely).

Saturday - Tytherington

Men's UltraVet - John Lebeter 14th

Sunday - Manchester East

A large area of flat central Manchester which was heaving with people and cars: a football match and the huge Great Manchester Run adding to the fun.   The canals were complex and caught out most competitors.   The map used the new mapping specification which has triangles and hatched lines to indicate tunnels and multiple levels.   These seemed effective at times, confusing at others and we felt the mapper hadn't quite pulled off perfect consistency.  Certainly something that's going to take a while for us all to get used to.

Women's SuperVet - Ruth Ker 1st

Men's SuperVet - Quentin Harding 2nd

Men's UltraVet - John Lebeter 12th

We rounded off the day by abducting 3 MDOC trestles which you may spot at the British Sprint Relays.  Should you ever need to transport trestles on the number 36, it has a perfect trestle-shaped luggage rack for your convenience.

Ruth

On Saturday a number of Claro's went to EBOR's excellent event in Easingwold. On Adult Long Andrew Kelly was 2nd , David Rochester 3rd, John Birtwistle 8th , Sharon Bowes 1st Lady and 9th , Andy Bowes was 10th, Allen Barnes was 14th , Susan Birtwistle 16th and Jackie Barnes 18th . On Adult Short Linda Kelly was 7th and Liz Rochester 8th ( apologies if I have missed anyone as Club name was not shown)

Claro at Buckingham Palace

No London Orienteering club haven't got permission for an epic event but 3 Claros visited the Queen last week.

A London Weekend (Ruth Ker)

Sunday 15 May.  Colchester UK Urban League event.   Ruth 1st Women's Super Vet.   Enjoyable run around Colchester which is somewhere I don't think I've ever been to before.  Indeed I may never have done an event by Essex Stragglers before so two firsts.  It was an easy trip out of London on the train from Liverpool Street.

Monday 16 May.   Gold Duke of Edinburgh garden party at the Queen's to celebrate Tamsin's achievement.   All the more enjoyable for bumping into fellow Claro Kerensa Welsby and her son Nathaniel.   Claros get everywhere! ( but no O tops)

Coming Up

These dates are all extracted from the excellent Event-O app.  If you think I have missed anything that would be of interest please let me know, also if any of the links don't work drop me an e-mail,  I add them as soon as there is something to show and some clubs change the link as the event details develop.

Northern Championships (28th April 2024)

Date for your diary - 28th April 2024
Yes, that is two years away!  But we need to start planning now as Claro will be involved in organising the Northern Champs to be held on the Airienteers area of Kilnsey South. This is a superb grassy limestone area used for the JK in 2016 - lets just hope for better weather in 2024.  Claro are not usually involved in organising national events because we don’t have any big enough areas (or perhaps the problem is that we don’t have any big enough car parks) and Aire have kindly offered a collaboration using their area.  We will also, definitely, need to take up Aire’s offer of any help that we need.
The committee will be discussing this at our next meeting but it would be good to know if anyone is interested in planning or organising for this event - or perhaps acting as a co-planner or co-organiser.

Also..

Organisers needed for 2022
Plans for the 2022 events are going well but we still need an organiser for the event at Bilton on 31st July.  This should be quite a small event with, hopefully, no big problems for the organiser and if you are an inexperience organiser there will be plenty of help on hand.
If you are prepared to have a go at organising an event but can’t do this one then also let me know - some swapping round may be possible.

Items for the newsletter

We have set up an e-mail address news@claro-orienteering.org.uk for you to send items to the newsletter should you want to promote any event, provide results , or  a plug for a report or article you have done for the website. I will do a quick scan for results but would be more than happy to receive them from the competitors.
