Summer daze

As kids across the Boro hang up their backpacks, we can't help but reminisce about summers of yore . . . tossin' Jarts with our baby brother, cruising the 'hood helmet-less on our Huffy, and riding around seatbelt-free in the back of the station wagon, headed for family vacation. Thanks, Mom & Dad, for never questioning safety.

Golf — a game fore everyone

Golf is a sport that truly fits all people to a tee. This summer, the inaugural U.S. Adaptive Open, a national championship showcasing the world's best golfers with disabilities, will be played on Pinehurst No. 6, July 18–20 at Pinehurst Resort. The 15th and newest championship from the USGA, the U.S. Adaptive Open will feature golfers like Greg Hooper, who is visually impaired and plays with the eyes and guidance of his son-turned-caddie, Alan. You concert with us

It's time to face the music. That's right, the Eastern Music Festival returns, June 25–July 30, with over 60 musical performances — some free, strings attached — from students, faculty and masters. Plus, the festival offers an array of music-themed programming, including five world premieres by living composers. We don't mean to toot our city's own horn, but this month-long jam session kicks brass. EMF is a nationally recognized classical music festival and summer educational program that includes musicians from around the world. Take a note from us and join in the fun. Tuba continued . . .

It was a beast to paint

You know an art exhibit is going to be incredible when best is in its name. "Bestiary: Animals as Symbols and Metaphors" opens at the Weatherspoon Art Museum, June 11–Dec.3.

Teens behind the wheel

Their fav potter might be Harry, but soon they'll be wielding a little ceramic magic. Art Alliance welcomes your kiddos, 12–17, to "Focus on the Wheel" at its summer pottery course. The first session spins June 13–16, with a glazing day on June 24. Does that mean there will be donuts?

Trapp music

The beloved musical tale of Maria, who was having nun of that, comes alive on stage during the Little Theatre of Winston-Salem's production of The Sound of Music, June 10–26. We're over here warming up — do, re, mi — for sing-along night, June 22.

Not your grandma's porch rockers

Porches become stages during Dunleath Porchfest from noon–5 p.m., Saturday, June 11. Lawn hop to catch 50 local musicians and bands fiddling around, singing and stomping a stoop beat. This event is free, but BYO chair or blanket, plus a donation of non-perishable food items.

Fun raising

Guilford Green Foundation & LGBTQ Center welcomes one and all to bid, boogie, and fill your belly with bites and beverages at its Gala & Green Party from 6 p.m.—midnight, Saturday, June 11, at Starmount Forest Country Club.

We like the sound of that

Elsewhere hosts its monthly Perceiver of Sound series — described as a cross between a skill-share, a think tank and an improvisation workshop — from 7–8:30 p.m., Tuesday, June 7. We're not totally sure what happens here, but we're all ears.

What's the going Raitt?

Here's something to talk about: Bonnie Raitt and special guest Lucinda Williams will be performing live at the Tanger Center at 8 p.m., Wednesday, June 8. We can't make you love them if you don't. But if you don't, that's on you.

What a Mofro

Don't get FOMO. JJ Grey and Mofro hit the stage at the Carolina Theatre with their Southern soul-rock at 8 p.m., Thursday, June 9.

Oppa Gamga style

Gamga Con, the Greensboro Library's free anime, manga and graphic novel convention, returns to Central Library from noon–4 p.m., Saturday, June 11. Sure to be anime-zing time, it includes a STEM petting zoo — likely hypoallergenic — interactive competitions and a cosplay contest.

Blackburn-ing for you

Wiley Cash describes Scott Blackburn's It Dies with You — released today! — as "a great novel about bad decisions and second chances." Sounds a lot like our autobiography. Join Blackburn at 6 p.m., Thursday, June 9, for a discussion at Scuppernong Books.

Headed to bokeh Raton

Looking to level up your travel photography skills? Snap to it with Elizabeth Larson Photography's three-session workshop at the Paul J.Ciener Botanical Garden in Kernersville from 5:30–8:30 p.m., Tuesdays, beginning June 7. Watch out, Nat Geo.

Pride and preju-dance

Dance like Jonathan Bailey is watching. High Point Museum invites one and all to learn English country dances of the 18th and 19th centuries, as seen in Bridgerton and Pride & Prejudice. Waltz right in for a free drop-in class, various times throughout the day, Saturday, June 11.

The only bull we're catching at this rodeo will be served on a bun with all the fixings. The High Point Food Truck Rodeo rolls into Truist Point from 4–9 p.m., Saturday, June 11.

We've got a sweat spot for any event that involves running and liquor, preferably in that order. At 8:30 p.m., Saturday, June 11, run 3.1 miles — in the dark — during the Greensboro Distilling Speakeasy 5K. With cocktails and live jazz music at the finish line, you're likely to PR. Time for some Beard care: On Monday, June 13, the 2022 James Beard Award winners will be announced. Greensboro's Machete may not have advanced from the semifinal rounds, but we're proud of this local culinary gem for its well-deserved recognition. (P.S. Read about Machete in O.Henry here.)

On Sunday, June 12, the Tony Awards will be presented, and this year's nominees include High Point native and tap dancer extraordinaire Jared Grimes for Best Featured Actor in a Musical for his role in the Funny Girl revival. No matter the outcome, don't rain on his parade — it'll make the shoes rust.
