Inflation is Deflating
The rhythm of life on the ranch hasn't changed much these last few years, but the world around us sure has. We've weathered a pandemic, fires and floods and are now facing the threat of avian influenza and the effects of severe inflation. On the avian influenza front, Tristan, as the president of the Small-Scale Meat Producers Association, has worked with the Ministry of Agriculture & Food to provide biosecurity protocols for producers like us who are unable to house their birds indoors.
On the inflation front, all we can do is to very reluctantly increase our prices so that we can pay our bills and stay in business. To give an idea of how inflation has affected us: feed prices from our beloved local organic mill have gone up 30 - 40%, labour costs are up 25%, butcher costs are up about $2.00/lb, and I'm sure we don't have to tell you about fuel prices. So, you will notice price increases on some of our products.
Honestly, even our current higher prices don't yet reflect the true increase in our costs - I just can't bring myself to do it yet, but they will likely need to continue to rise. We may also be canceling our turkeys this year, as the feed they consume has gone up in price by 60%, and I can't see increasing our turkey prices enough to compensate. Please just know that providing you with quality food is important to us and we will continue to try our best to keep our products as accessible as possible. Together we'll make it though.
