This Week's Torah Portion

B’chukotai (My Laws) בְּחֻקֹּתי

If you follow My laws and faithfully observe My commandments, I will grant your rains in their season, so that the earth shall yield its produce and the trees of the field their fruit. - Leviticus 26:3-4

God promises blessings to the Children of Israel if they follow the law and warns about the curses that will befall the people if they do not observe God's commandments. (26:1-46)
Gifts made to the Sanctuary whether by conditional vows or by unconditional acts of pious gratitude are discussed. (27:1-34)

BEIT EMANUEL MATTERS

Power Outage Kabbalat Shabbat

For those of you who missed it (well, okay, most of you did!), last week’s Shabbat evening service was something of a challenge, which turned into a beautiful and meaningful community and spiritual experience. The weather was, as you may recall, cold and rainy. We didn’t have load shedding scheduled, but the power went off just after 5 PM nonetheless. When it became apparent that power would not be restored, the lay leaders present made the call to hold a low-tech service on the Bimah, by the light of our emergency lanterns, and with no audio or video technology, apart from one laptop streaming the service to Zoom. The result was as per the collage above (images courtesy of Diane Fine and Saul Nossel, collage by Irwin Manoim). Power was eventually restored only much later, during the Brocha.

Happening this Shabbat/Weekend

Our Shabbat Evening and Morning Services will again be taken by our lay readers, as the Rabbi will be attending the SAUPJ Biennial Conference at Bet Menorah in Pretoria. Load shedding is scheduled only for late Friday evening (starting at 8 PM), so we’re hoping the services will be less eventful, but still beautiful and meaning in terms of community and Ruach.

SAUPJ Biennial Conference

While bookings for the SAUPJ Biennial Conference (27-29 May at our sister congregation, Bet Menorah) have officially closed, we’re pretty sure they’ll accommodate you if you do decide to attend. Here are the links that you’ll need:
