Role
Linda Leith Publishing and the Quebec Writers’ Federation are seeking a person to research and engage in relationship building with new, early-career, and professional Indigenous writers, storytellers, and literary artists in Quebec.
The aim is to create links and awareness of English-language writing and literary opportunities in Quebec for new and early-career Indigenous writers. This will include helping to curate at least one Indigenous-focussed Issue of new literary magazine Font in 2022; exploring other possibilities to showcase Indigenous literary activity in English and Indigenous languages; and helping to find opportunities for career development for new Indigenous writers and literary artists.
Font magazine has a mandate to shine a light on compelling and innovative literary activity across Quebec, in English and other minority languages. The magazine engages and pays new and early-career writers for original written, audio and multimedia contributions. The publication aims to represent and showcase the diversity of languages, communities and cultures who share this land, including the multiple Indigenous Nations, including Abenaki, Algonquin, Atikamekw, Cree, Haudenosaunee, Huron-Wendat, Innu, Wolastoqiyik (Maliseet) Mi’kmaq, Naskapi, Métis, and Inuit.
Responsibilities
- To approach and build relationships with Indigenous cultural organizations in Quebec, particularly focussing on those outside Montreal/Tio’tia:ke.
- To explore the possibilities for producing at least one Issue of Font magazine centred around contemporary Indigenous writing and storytelling, in all forms, including audio, video, multimedia and multilingual contributions.
- To support career development for new and early-career Indigenous writers by connecting them to various literary opportunities and organizations in Quebec, including QWF.
The successful candidate must be fluent in English and preferably based in Quebec. Some French language would also be considered an asset.
Much of the work can be done remotely, but some face-to-face meetings would be desirable if circumstances allow.

What is Font magazine?
Font is a monthly online magazine that spotlights compelling and innovative English-language literary activity from across Quebec. The publication serves to create professional opportunities for new and early-career writers, performers, storytellers, translators, publishers, arts workers, partners, and other leaders working in English and other minority languages.
Font acknowledges the settler colonial context it emerges from and is dedicated to learning and practising intersectional, decolonial approaches to publishing.
Font’s editorial team is situated in Montreal / Tio’tia:ke on the unceded lands of the Kanien’kehá:ka Nation. Font respects the continued connections with the past, present and future in our relationships with Indigenous and other peoples in communities within Montreal and Quebec. Font strives to carry this spirit of connection forward in its work and in helping to mark literary creations by people from multiple and divergent lived realities from across Quebec.
What is the Quebec Writers’ Federation?
The QWF is a vibrant and inclusive community organization that develops, supports, and promotes those writing in English in Quebec at all stages of their careers. Our work includes providing professional development and employment opportunities, raising the profile of emerging and established writers, increasing access to literary activities for communities throughout the province, and increasing public interaction with the literary arts.
The Quebec Writers’ Federation represents diverse individuals who live and create on traditional territories of many First Peoples. Our office is located at Tiohtiá:ke, which is what the Kanien’kehá:ka (Mohawk) call Montreal. This place has been and continues to be a historical gathering place for many Indigenous peoples.
